In an interview with comingsoon.net, Johnny Depp talked a little about the Sweeney Todd movie.
CS: Is Tim Burton doing Edgar Allen Poe with you?
Depp: No, not that I've heard of but boy, that's an exciting possibility. We've been talking about doing "Sweeney Todd" together which is very exciting.
CS: How close is that?
Depp: Don't know. Tim and I talked about it a long time ago actually, or the possibility a long time ago so now the people who panic are panicking.
CS: The musical version?
Depp: I'm assuming.
CS: Do you sing?
Depp: Not yet.

The part about Sweeney Todd is about half way down.
"CS: Do you sing?
Depp: Not yet."
THAT's encouraging.
Well... this may be a horror movie after all.

What if Michael Moore played Sweeney? He can sing.

Yeah, but think about Walk the Line. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon couldn't sing before the movie but I think they did a pretty good job.
Give Johnny Depp the right voice coach and he should do just fine. He could also just be modest. A lot of people don't think they are very good singers, when in actuality they are.
You're right about Reese and Joaquin, but they weren't trying to play The Queen of the Night and Rigoletto, either.
The role of Sweeney isn't for "newbies."
Still, I do adore Johnny Depp and his level of talent. He has surprised me before in many ways, so I will keep an open mind... and a couple of ear plugs handy, just in case.
How good of a singer do you have to be to sing that dreck? I mean, it's not as if it were OKLAHOMA! or KISMET, or something with really great music.
Oh, boy.

Um...JohnBoy2,...Sweeney Todd is pretty much opera...'nuff said.
I'm with you, best. Johnny Depp has made me go, "Wow" on a many occassions. With the right vocal coach, I think he would be phenomenol. I just hope they either flesh out Anthony/Johanna or just dump them all together. As it stands now with the show, I don't think they will translate well to film.

Watch out, Kitz . . . that desk might have a loose nail or something.

That doesn't make it good music. It's still dreck. I didn't say it wasn't a lot of singing, just how good of a singer do you have to be to sing it? Especially, in a film. It's not as if someone has to sustain a voice for the running time of the thing. Frankly, when I saw it (3 times!), in its original run, tour and revival, I always found the score, over-sung.

Opera, even if it is dreck, is still hard to sing...I wasn't saying that just becauyse it's opera, it's good...I was saying that you need to be a good singer for it.
He will be amazing as Sweeny Todd! I could just eat him up!

I heard you were gay. Aren't you gay?

What a great way to get someone off track of the original topic. His/her sexual orientation has nothing to do with you and is frankly none of your business.

Here was an interview with Johnny that mentioned Sweeney (for the full interview, there is a link in the thread "MSN talks to Johnny...."):
Q: How comfortable will you be in one of your future projects, a film version of the musical, “Sweeney Todd”?
Tim Burton and I have had our discussions about it and everything is looking good. It is a great opportunity to work with Tim again. It will be our sixth movie together. As far as my singing is concerned, I don’t want to shock anyone but I am not a singer (laughter). I would never ever claim to be a singer but I am willing to give it a shot, to see if it works. It is important to try stuff.
Q: Have you started musical training?
I grew up as a guitar player. I was a musician for most of my life. I am musically inclined and I am not tone deaf. At least, not yet.

For a man of your age, you sound like a petty 5 year old.
You really know how to go out of your way to bash Sweeney or another Sondheim show. You're really pathetic.
And I don't know what planet you're on where OKLAHOMA is harder to sing than SWEENEY TODD.

Does anyone think they might dub his voice?
whose voice would they dub it with? Danny Elfman? (id kill myself) And it won tbe a bway actor cuz theyd want to be on screen if they had to sing.

- Talk to Marni Nixon and Lisa Kirk (Lisa is unfortunatly not here anymore)
But those are/were two Broadway actresses who dubbed some very famous Hollywood actresses in big motion pictures.
I hope Johnny does not need to be dubbed though!

Somehow, I feel like even if he happens to be a glorious singer he will be anything BUT a booming baritone.
And he will be the most boyish, inocent looking Sweeney Todd I've ever seen.
I hope this doesn't happen. I'm still loving the idea of Sam Mendes directing this too much.
If it is dreck, why did you see it 3 times?
