re: Josh Groban on Broadway !

A huge number of people say him act before ever hearing him sing. He was on ALLY McBEAL as a high shcool kid who wanted to sue the girl who said she'd go to prom with him, then backed out at the last minute. He did a second episode a year later in which his mother died. He was very good at playing a modern, angst-ridden teen.

I'm not crazy about Josh in general.

and when did we decide that reviewers are always right?

I did not see him in Chess, but have seen a bit of his acting.

I'll say again, he can use some seasoning but compared to some of the stunt casting garbage pulled on Broadway, I'd have to say that I'd rather see him in a musical and listen to HIM sing than Britney Spears who has been suggested for several roles.

If stunt casting continues on the stage in NY you can pretty much kiss the triple threat goodbye anyway. The days of people coming to NY and struggling to pay voice, dance and acting teachers are over...because for the most part, those people can only expect to advance into the chorus these days...the bigger parts are given to people who can barely act, sing OR dance...so why would you hold Groban aside as an exception when he can at least do SOME of these things?

If you just don't like him...say so...that has nothing to do with someone's talent...it's personal taste.

The boy can sing

Groban has got an impressive range and handles the classical (with a slight pop edge) very well. I think he might do well on Broadway. Raoul in Phantom or maybe Tony in West Side Story. His rendition of "Somewhere" w/ Charlotte Church was actually pretty good.

Hurtful

I'm really glad to see that Carl's horrible message about me was erased. It was really awful. Anyway, when talking about things you're passionate about here just remember...don't take it too far. It's not life an death. If someone doesn't like who you like...take it with a grain of salt. Calling people fat hags and being complete ass holes for no reason is not cool at all. just disagree...politely.

on that note. Josh is amazing and he was great in Chess...I completely forgot about that (so was BeBe Neuwirth!)

Well, I'm done with this subject. It got too rough. I'm a peaceful person....

Hurtful

The funny thing that comes to mind when I read this is that Josh Groban majored in acting in high school, not singing. I know because he is a graduate of the high school i currently attend. Apperantly he didnt even consider singing as an option of career til his junior or senior year. Anyways, on subject, I've never seen him act in person so I dont know how good he would be but his voice is amazing so I give him major credit in that.

U of M and Josh

yeah, josh was also not admitted into ANY musical theatre programs in the country. He auditioned for a lot of them. I know for a fact that when he auditioned for U of M, Brent Wagner was awed by his vocal talent, but his acting was...eh! But no one can deny that he's a great singer.

U of M and Josh

I performed with Josh in the 'You Raise Me Up' chorus on his recent 'closer' tour. Not only is he a great talent, but he has no ego whatsoever! Which really amazed me considering how big he is and all... Anyway, I would love to see him in a comedic role. Mon. Firmin in 'Phantom' perhaps?

I just wish the Chess concert was recorded

Josh's talent

no one can ever deny that josh has an amazing voice that can handle classical and pop music with ease. However ive heard from reliable sources that the Chess benifit was..eh. however, if josh ever came to broadway, i would be the first online at the box office, or calling ticketmaster to get a ticket front row center.

i *heart* josh...cya at MSG!

"Have any of you seen him act outside of a concert?"

Does Chess count? I saw it twice (the rehearsal and at the show) and his voice was great but I must agree that his acting leaves a lot to be desired. I think it may have helped that the show had an amazing cast backing him up so it wasn't SO obvious?

As for concerts, he does have a wonderful voice but the concert itself was kinda boring. It was just him singing and maybe making a comment or two. The rest of the time he was just walking around the stage. My girlfriend actually got me tickets for his next concert (instead going nuts thinking what to get each other for xmas each of us buys two tickets to the show and we go to both together. Definatly a win-win situation, if you ask me. The show isn't for another month but I'll update then if anyone is interested.

My sources tell me that he was in discussions to perform again for one night but ended up not signing on for it.

That production of Chess was one of the most amazing shows I have had the pleasure of attending.

"He has done some amateur theater....."

Yeah but maybe he should go back to that. Don't get me wrong, I love his voice and LOVED Chess but needs some kind of acting coach so he could improve.

Josh's talent

he would never be cast to play anthony in sweeney... anthony is a lyric/classical baritone... josh is a classical tenor... wouldn't work, i've a copy of the score and in a lot of the songs he is actually written to sing very very low... and we can all hear in "to where you are" that josh is not a low-boy.

well you know divacathe, telling someone to go kill themselves is not the kindest thing to say either. I don't think Carl's reply was very nice, but nor was your comment. I think yours should be erased too. IMO.
