I think we're also conflating two cateogories that can overlap but, don't actually mean the same thing.
There are many celebrities who will do anything to garner press. Actors can be celebrities...but they can also not be celebrities. I wouldn't call Strickland a celebrity. He's an actor and a singer.
So, yes. Tila Tequila can get some press by claiming lesbianism, or bisexuality. But we still have major actors dating and marrying members of the opposite sex to protect their careers. I'm looking at you Squinty and Coops!

Haven't we moved past that tiresome phrase yet: "Was there any one who actually thought he was straight?"
I thought intelligent people stopped saying that 5 years ago.
The point is the accumulation of an ever-larger number of performers, sports figures, politicians and other public figures who are comfortable being open an honest about their affectional orientation.
I love publicity whores who have no idea they are whores.

If you don't already have enough publicity that coming out won't "suddenly" make you the center of attention, then it's usually for som eamount of publicity.
Neil Patrick Harris did it when he was doing pretty damn well. If Justin Timberlake (who is straight, I'm not implying anything, just giving an example) suddenly came out, it would hardly be for publicity, since he's already pretty A-list.
