I think I may have written this in my "review" in this thread. I had NO interest in seeing this. I REALLY don't like war stuff.. I went and was SO moved. Please please please go if you can. That is why it's failing. Because sadly, there are just too many people who feel as we do or did.
I can't encourage you enough to see this play. I totally agree that this is not a play about war. There's no violence, no blood and guts to speak of, no visuals. It's about the psychological impact on good and ordinary men called on to do horrific and extraordinary acts. I mentioned on ATC (forgive me if you've read this already), but I went to the play for the express purpose of seeing Boyd Gaines. Instead, I saw Mr. Osborne and Stanhope and Raleigh and the rest of their outfit. I felt their hopefulness, comraderie, courage, cowardice, resignation, and defeat. I felt very much that I was in the dug out, and the resolution of the play struck me personally. I too could not move. I had to take 10 minutes after the lights came up to compose myself. I think this production of Journey's End is what theatre is all about. It moved me, made me think, made me chuckle, and made me admire the craft of all of the great actors involved.
Please see it. You'll only be overwhelmed and very glad you did.
The arguments really aren't helping me. The IDEA of the whole thing doesn't appeal to me. Male bonding? ICK.
The more I read, the more I'm passing. So... That's fine. Y'all have the shows you love. I have the shows I love.
(Also, the last TWO times I've been hesitant about seeing something and caved to the "YOU MUST SEE IT!!!!" voices, I ended up hating the shows and wishing I'd never spent the money to see them in the first place. So...my tastes are obviously not the same as a lot of people.)
