Just witnessed the debut of Adam and Anthony: LIVE!

Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp had an early start on their concert tour tonight. It was in a smaller area not very far away from where I live, and it was pretty much in cognito (Only locals knew about it). Their performances were astounding!!!

Adam was joined by his partner Larry Edoff, and sang songs from some of his favorite (and not-so-favorite) musicals, along with a few of his original songs, and of course, "One Song Glory". Larry also sang a song of his own. Adam also sang a tribute to one of his favorite artists, Ronnie James Dio, as well as his Rent audition song for an encore.

After a ten minute intermission, Anthony took the stage. His songs seemed much more upbeat and he was much more active than Adam, but they were both phenomenal. Anthony gave the audience a preview of "Without You", which starts on Monday, along with a few of his favorite songs, among which were "Losing My Religion" by R.E.M. and "Creep" by Radiohead. After Anthony finished, he brought Adam back out to sing a duet of "What You Own", before they both left the stage.

Anthony then returned for his own encore, which was a very emotional rendition of "Finale B" from RENT. Adam then emerged from the wings and they both began to sing "Seasons of Love". Even though they flubbed the lyrics a couple times, they sang beautifully and the audience joined in with them. It was a truly remarkable performance by the two.

About 15 minutes after the show, the two emerged to sign autographs and meet the fans. They were both very kind, but quick, because they had to be in New York early in the morning. Anthony even personalized my autograph (I didn't ask him to, he was just that generous). I'll definitely be catching them again once the tour starts!!!!

I am glad they did the tour of RENT. I got to see them and met and talked to both of them at the opening night party. Also got pics with them. During the party he noticed a group of people through the restaurant window looking in with all of their RENT stuff in hand and siad he couldn't just let them stand out there. He excused himself and I asked if I could join him and take pictures. he said sure. he was a sweetheart.

"Losing My Religion" has a slight connection to RENT. Rapp sang it at his audition and mentions it a few times in his book.

I think it is going to be hard for them to "escape" RENT. But maybe they don't want to.

Here is one of the pics I took of Adam signing outside of the restaurant in Denver:

The songs they sang from Rent were:
One Song Glory
Without You
What You Own
Seasons of Love

and Anthony sang Mimi and the Life Support group's portion of "Another Day" as an encore (Sorry, I got that confused with Finale B).

Adam also sang his Rent audition song, which was "Red Hill Mining Town" by U2.

I have actually never heard him do that. How was it?

@luvtheEmcee

It was very well done. I liked it much better than U2's version. As we all know, Adam can really hit those high notes...even in places where we aren't expecting them! But it was very emotional, he even said a bit before he began about how the song was the beginning of his journey and how much it meant to him, which I thought helped with the emotional factor.

Lol I guess Mimi really would be old for her age if that were the case. xD

I can see them reprising the roles of Mark and Roger again at some point in the future, I mean look at how many times they've done it already! I could also possibly see Jesse and Wilson for Collins and Angel again. But Daphne really is too old to play Mimi again and Fredi already refused to appear in the film because of her age. I really don't see Idina or Taye going back to this either...

I may make fun of them while there, but even at 50 I would still go see Adam as Roger. It's a weakness.

Concerts aside, age is always going to be an issue with "Rent," as was made obvious by many reactions to the movie. People in their late teens, early 20s drifting aimlessly without jobs, etc. is at least somewhat palatable/believable to audiences.

But most original "Rent" castmembers are around my age (38-40) and that's a lifetime away from "ungrounded youth." It's a slippery slope from plucky/edgy squatters to sad/dreary vagrants. No more "Rent" tours for these guys. Please.

I don't think anyone is suggesting they legitimately PLAY the roles into their 40's and 50's or whatever. As you said, concert settings are a different story, and I think they are MORE than entitled to keep singing those songs. And people still want to see it. I don't see what the issue with that is, and how continuing to sing the songs is seen as "not letting go" in a negative sense when plenty of their predecessors have done the same with signature pieces.
