Has anyone seen Anne Hathaway's mother, Kate Hathaway, in LES MIZ? In interviews, Anne said that Fantine was the role of a lifetime, especially since her mom had played her in the US tour some time back. So, for those of you who have seen Kate , how was she as Fantine? How did she compare to Anne's interpretation of the character? Thanks in advance!
Her mother was an understudy for Fantine in the show's 1st national tour (Valjean Company), and actually got to play her many times, according to Anne.
I saw the 1st national tour when it stopped for a 2-month engagement at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles back in 1991. I still have the program but haven't checked if Anne's mom was in the cast I saw. I know she didn't play Fantine at the performance I saw though. That was the brilliant Susan Gilmour.
I've been meaning to dig that program out and check, but my place is a mess!
My mom saw Kate when the tour was in Philly years ago. Apparently the Hathaways are still in Southeastern Pennsylvania, as my mom also has her nails done by the same woman as Anne’s cousin’s wife.
While she was waiting for her appointment last month, she was chatting with the cousin and she was talking about “a wedding she went to a few months ago that was really secretive” and it took us several days to put together the pieces…

Kate McCauley (now Kate Hathaway) joined the First National Tour in its final week in Boston in June 1990, opened at the National Theater in D.C. in July 1990, moved to the Forrest Theater in Philadelphia in September 1990, and left the tour when it went on to LA in January 1991. She understudied Susan Dawn Carson in Washington, and then Laurie Beachman who joined the tour as the regular Fantine in Philadelphia. Mark McVeigh was Jean Valjean. She went on quite a few times.
That's awesome to know. Thanks!
I love details. It's like crack to me!!!
