Does anyone else think Finneran would be perfect in GREY GARDENS?
She's a natural for the kookiness of the second act, but she also has the right amount of sincerity and poise to pull of act one. Her voice (not really showcased in PROMISES, PROMISES) is pretty great too.
Here's hoping we see much more of her in the years to come!

People think of her as an actress who can just carry a tune because she hasn't done as many musicals in New York, but Finneran has a really great voice (she went to Carnegie Melon for musical theatre for a year before dropping out.)
Her Sally Bowles in the CABARET revival was particularly well sung. There's no doubt in my mind she could handle the score to GREY GARDENS.

Just because she CAN sing doesn't mean she has the right vocal type. Sally Bowles and Marge Macdougal are VERY different than the Edies. She could handle Revolutionary Costume, Hominy Grits and Around the World, but I can't hear her doing Will You? or Another Winter in a Summer Town.

"I believe it, but she's still too young."
i don't know why they would have made the movie so different then. Drew Barrymore is not "too young" and she played all facets of Little Edie. I know Christine Ebersole is 57 but it doesn't mean all people playing Little Edie have to be 57. If they have the acting chops and can carry off a role going from 1941-1973 so be it.

Posted: 6/23/10 at 2:05amI think she could pull off Little Edie (first act) just fine. I think she'd also make a great Charlotte in A Little Night Music. Shoot, now I am just casting her in all of Erin Davie's previous roles. But looks aside, I think she would nail the dry humor Charlotte needs.

Wow, BroadwayBound, Finneran as Charlotte is sort of an inspired idea. Not sure if it'd work or not but it'd be great to find out, of course in this production she's more likely to get cast as Desiree (well, understudy) than Charlotte.
Somethingwicked, I actually think she would be brilliant in this role. I'm not sure about her voice, but I wouldn't mind seeing a not as perfectly sung Big Edie in Act I to see a brilliant and wonderful acting job throughout. I think she'd be able to handle all aspects of the role beautifully and with her the part would be comedy gold (I think she might even find laughs where Ebersole didn't, as brilliant as the latter was in the part). Love it! Now how do we make this happen?

Piper, all due respect, but what are you talking about? Do you know the musical? The track being discussed is Big Edie in Act I and Little Edie in Act II, both characters well into their 50s.
That's why Finneran is too young. It has nothing to do from playing younger to older. That's the HBO movie version of the story, not the stage show.
