Ford just died?! Wow...I am behind in the news, eh?
Well...I am on EST...so I guess I have an excuse.

Am I crazy or did Ebersole switch around some of the lines...I know it was a cutting (and edited on top of it) but it seemed she replaced some words...I'll go back and rewatch to give an example. That being said...love her in Grey Gardens and most everything else but wasn't over the moon about that performance.
I thought Roger was a nice breath of fresh air. I think she'll make an excellent NYC Evita when her time comes. She looks like a firecracker. And did y'all notice after her performance Steven Spielberg turned to Lloyd Webber and said "She's really wonderful!"...go back and watch it...he did.
I wish they would ditch those same Kennedy Center Dancers they use every year...
Buckley is still faboo but does the same hand gestures every single time she sings that song.
JCS - blah...if that's the current Judas I'll skip that tour.
Groban looked even more elvish than normal...
Brightman is still working that Dive hairstyle I see...

What was title of the finale song in Speilberg section?
And I think Ebersole did kinda mess up the words.

Yeeeah, Christine had a little lyric flub...instead of "we'll have early morning madness," she sang "we'll have madness in the morning." Which made me laugh a lot. And caused my mother to look at me funny.
But whatever, Christine is fabulous.

I loved each tribute this year! My faves? Parts in every segment. India Arie, The Temptations, the Israeli Philharmonic, Elena Roger, Christine Ebersole, Josh Groban, "it's expensive to look this cheap" from Reese Witherspoon, Carrie Underwood, Kenny Rogers, Shania Twain, Liam Neeson, and "Make Our Garden Grow" featuring the E.T. symbol.
As for Steven Spielberg, "Make Our Garden Grow" from Candide was fitting for someone who does best what he knows best. He dreamed for others while they also dreamed, and built a house for them with his own chopped wood, and made everything else grow. If you listened to the people Tom Hanks introduced, John Williams' choice for this song is but appropriate. And I loved the change from regular bars to the E.T. moon homage! I hope ALW didn't think of this as a movie-musical experience. Hahaha.

Hmmm..
Am I the only one who thought Ebersole's performance was annoying? Her vibrato bothers me and I don't think the performance as a whole had much power to it at all. But again, I forgot, around here, Ebersole can do no wrong.
Roger was stunning and Josh looked out of his league. Buckley was fine, and the reason why Brightman only sang one verse is because that was the verse she sang (as Jemima) in the original London production.
Overall, I enjoyed Dolly's montage much more. Shania Twain's rendition of my favorite Dolly song was truly moving.

I thought her performance was very good. But others have described her performance as extraordinary. I'm all for giving credit were credit is due but her performance here was no more than very good. (However, her performance in Grey Gardens is indeed extraordinary.)

Posted: 12/27/06 at 9:42amI'm saying nothing about her performance in Grey Gardens. I'm saying that having seen Buckley, Streisand, Paige, Lupone and Close perform the number, Ebersole looks ordinary.

My thoughts:
Why do they even bother to put Bush on camera when he's going to look bored out of his skull? Maybe he's obligated to come to these things, but does he have to look like he's got terminal constipation? Jeez, Laura just had a tumor removed and looked happy to be there!
Elena "No Plural" Roger was okay, even if she was channeling young Patti LuPone (the best Eva ever). And the liberties she was taking were decidedly NOT mere artistic flourishes, they were indicative of the problem with all ALW's early work: When you write showtunes in the pop/rock idiom, people tend to think your work is open to broad (and often misguided) interpretation. Otherwise, why would we be "treated" to a Judas with day-glo orange hair and a white duster doing a Mariah/Whitney impersonation? Absolutely horrid.
Apparently ALW has written nothing since SUNSET BOULEVARD, since the music stopped there. Why the heck must we be treated to the same half-dozen songs over and over? Thank God we were spared a live JOSEPH number.
What a missed opportunity to get a bit of exposure for other ALW shows like ASPECTS (which, BTW HAD a great song in it), STARLIGHT EXPRESS, WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND (How I'd have loved to have seen ALW's shamefaced apology to Speilberg when they played his rip-off from JURASSIC PARK), BEAUTIFUL GAME or even his new piece, what is it? MOONLIGHT AND MARGARITA?
Groban: A great voice, paired with the WRONG song.
Buckley: WHY wasn't she singing "As If We Never Said Goodbye?" No fault of Christines; she's great, but BETTY was simply the BEST Norma of all time. And I'm sick of "Memory."
Does ALW ever think back to when he was married to Sarah Brightman and slash his wrists at the sight of what a total babe she has become? I bet when he wakes up next to that horse-faced old prune he married, he does.

I really didn't care for Josh Groban's "Music of the Night".
I enjoyed the Dolly montage and set... because she's just great. Even if you don't country music, it's hard not to like Dolly.
And it looked like President Bush was sort of rocking out to "Islands In The Stream". Hah.

I cracked up at Josh Groban's face when he sang "Let your soul take you where you long to be"
Are there anyone who taped it and are willing to capture that part on a picture?

Becoz...
He was likely there because the Kennedy Center is the living memorial for JFK, who was a supporter of the arts in the United States.

Hah, me too!
I couldn't take the song seriously after that... I mean, it's a pretty song...but my goodness, his facial expression was just hilarious.

I thought when Josh hit those higher notes he kind of looked like Chicken Little. It was a good performance but his facial expressions were something else...

LOL I think he did a decent job with the the song, not the best I have ever heard but not the worst either.

It's a state affair, so Bush had to be there. It's not just a plain entertainment piece for audiences (well, given the fact that they ask bigger names to perform and salute these great artists, I use "just"), but also a national salute to legends.
The president was, is and always will be there. Bill and Hillary were there during his term, and Hillary and Bill will be there during her term.
Ahem.
