Having seen Elena Roger (NO S on her last name please) in London, I thought she sounded great on that song. As for Josh Grobin, I did wonder why, with all the actors who have played Phantom over the years, they couldn't have managed to use one of them to sing MUSIC OF THE NIGHT. I have nothing against Groban per se, he just doesn't "move" me.
Yes, the Smokey Robinson segment was first.

Lizzie...I'm seeing him in concert in March...seeing that mesh live performance has given me some hesitation.
Yeah, I've never disliked Groban's voice, but he's never been anything that special (in my eyes/ears) and I'm also very surprised they picked him for this. Of all the ex-Phantoms out there...

I have had the same issues...I'll have to see for certain in 2 months.
Thanks kec! Settling in for the rest of the show! They are about to do ALW. Think I will tape it.
OK...the Candide finale was beautiful (except for the chorus' bad diction) and Speilberg seemed very moved, but I don't get the connection. Is it just me?
"Could they have cut Simpson out?"
Yes, she was cut completely. I posted that in the third post of the thread. She sang '9 to 5' and f'd it up horribly. They did a retake of it with an empty theatre. They decided to not include that take either.
Yeah, I didn't get the Speilberg/Candide connection either. I thought it would have been more appropriate to have John Williams conducting an orchestra playing music for Speilberg flics with video playing on a big screen or something like that.

Is it just me or did Dolly in her younger years resemble Ebersole?
Speaking of Ebersol, she would be great in the rola of norma desmond. unfortunately, it ain't gonna happen. Taped the whole ALW segment

Groban was horrific. Do not debate this one. Ebersole was lovely - she'd make a great Norma, although it does sound like she has a bit of a cold. Buckley - she was great 30 years ago - not so much anymore. Brightman - it was nice to see her glowing and happy for her ex-husband's achievement. Elena - decent - nice to see an Evita that can truly sing AND dance at the same time.
Lay off Andrew's facial expressions - he was obviously moved by the tribute. If anyone had done as much as some of these artists had over the last so many years, you'd be honored and touched, too, to see your material performed by today's stars and performers.
Oh, and there was no A in Music of the Night. It's an A flat. LOL - and flat is...well...what it was. *catches Josh's eyeball*
All in all, a nice, fitting tribute to a great composer.
Simpson asked to be removed from the broadcast.

OOOps. I was about to type A flat too. Thanks for the correction!
Christin Ebersole honestly just gave the best performance of a single song I've ever seen. I got completely teary-eyed during her performance. Elena Roger was terrible. What language was she speaking? I couldn't understand more than two words of what she was singing. For some reason I started laughing during Josh Groban's performance. Probably because this incredible voice was coming out of this skinny- curly haired guy. Betty was great. I saw ALW becoming teary- eyes during Buckley and Ebersole's performance.

Christine was AMAZING. Simply perfect.
I loved how ALW was mouthing the words to some of the songs.

What was wrong with Josh Groban?? I thought he was amazing. I'm not debating, I'm asking why you thought he was horrific, I honestly am very curious to know! = )
Do they sell these on DVD? This is the first year I've watched this and I'm dying to see the ones from before!

No offense...we've already said why we didn't enjoy him numerous times...look anywhere from 9:45pm posts to now...you'll see them.
To answer your question...I do not think so...perhaps they make a collector's DVD every now and then.
ETA: I'd certainly like one too, Lizzy.
ELENA ROGER. NO PLURAL.
I thought the entire ALW segment was nice. Nothing really blew me away. My favorite segment, was the Dolly Parton segment!

I for one think Josh Groban would be amazing as Beast in B&tB! Just a weird casting brainstorm. He said on Oprah that he went to theatre school, so he can probably act it well, too. And the ticket sales would go nuts with ecstatic middle aged moms dragging kids along = ) hahaha. plus they have never had a celebrity play Beast, although they have for nearly every other character. I think Disney should look into this!

Not everybody can be in Beauty&the Beast.

Josh Groban as the Beast? Sure - if the Beast is going to look constipated as he sings. Watch out, Belle - never know when an eyeball may come flying at'cha!

well you can't even see his face with all the prosthetics anyways so it wouldn't matter.
I hope they run it here. President Ford just died and they will probably pre-empt programming.
The show is just ending here in Denver. The Speilberg segment just ended and all I can say is wow! The performance of the piece from Candide blew. me. away. And moved me to tears.
