Kerry should have been nominated for Hairspray. It was a travesty she wasn't.
Just like Ann Harada not getting a nomination for Avenue Q or Janine LaManna not getting a nomination for Seussical (say what you will about the show, Janine was great as Gertrude McFuzz).

Sherie Rene Scott will definitely be featured.
A list of leading actresses that I can think off the top of my head that will all be up for a nomination along with Butler:
Dee Hoty-LONE STAR LOVE
Jenna Russell-SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE
Sierra Borgess-LITTLE MERMAID
Megan Mullally or/and Sutton Foster-YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
Miss Adelaide (Jane Krakowski? Debra Messing?)-GUYS & DOLLS
Sara Brown (unless producers petition her as featured like in the original production)-GUYS & DOLLS
Faith Prince-A CATERED AFFAIR
Sally Bowles-CABARET (if it opens this season)
Stockard Channing (maybe)-PAL JOEY (if it opens this season)
Female Lead from CRY BABY (if there is one)
Looks like it's going to be another tough year for leading ladies.

Butler is pretty much a lock for a nomination. We we will have to wait until later in the season to predict her chances of winning.
Sherie will be in featured because they would like to have Sierra be considered for leading. At this point, I am already putting bets on Sherie winning in that category.
EIDT: "Maybe, I mean she is Sandy"
To be honest Sandy isn't a very good role. She has little time onstage and is quite a bland character, in my opinion. So far from the reviews we have heard, Laura isn't doing anything special with the role. I understand the show hasn't even opened yet but I am just going by what we have heard so far.

Just like Cheno was a lock, right?
#33re: Kerry Butler's Tony hopes?
Posted: 8/3/07 at 7:14pmI don't know because. Scott has Andrea Martin, Sutton Foster, and Megan Mulally to compete with (depending on which is considered leading and which featured). That is probably two women to compete with, who are probably locks for nods.

Plus
Testa
Hoffman
Bloddy Mary
The Ladies In The Heights
Leslie Kriztler (Depending on the size of her role)
And perhaps someone from Cry Baby/Lone Star Love/A Tale of Two Cities

Wiz, Miss Adelaide is a leading role. It's usually Sara Brown the one that is up for debate between leading and featured, Isabel Bingley won a Tony as Featured Actress for the original production (though it may have been because she was billed under the title and we all know about the strict rules back then) but Josie de Guzman was nominated for the Leading Actress category and lost to Faith Prince who played Miss Adelaide. I am guessing depending on who is cast as Brown she'll be put in Featured or Leading.
Unless the role has changed substantially since Chenoweth left the show, Megan Mullally will be considered leading actress for YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN. As written for Chenoweth, Elizabeth was to be a huge role, I assume Mullally being a "celebrity" of sorts, the role has remained the same size.

I know she has no chances but the question is... would she be elegible as "leading actress" just for being Sandy in Grease?
#39re: Kerry Butler's Tony hopes?
Posted: 8/3/07 at 10:22pmOh, I didn't know that Ray. I assumed she was a featured part...
#40re: Kerry Butler's Tony hopes?
Posted: 8/3/07 at 10:23pmIf Laura is above the title.. Which she is, right? She'd be considered leading. Unless it is petitioned. And I think the producers would want her considered for leading - though she has a very slim chance against these other actresses.

Ashley Brown, MARY POPPINS, no nom
Josh Strickland, TARZAN, no nom
Sorry Sierra, you're in bad hands with DISNEY and actor/Tonys
unless you're Heather
and I hear you ain't.
It's still very early but I think Butler has a def nom chance.

RE: Sandy
I think it'll be a problem. THe producers will put her in the leading actress category - so she might not get a nom. If they're smart and put her up for suporting- she will!

^ I don't think the producers would want the "star" of their show to be in the featured category.

Yew Wonderfulwizard, but that was before Schumaker made himself the star and not the actors, see his billing on the MERMAID poster,
And what actor was nominated for THE LION KING?
I don't remember.

Exactly - and then the Lea Michele thing will happen.
I LOVE Mary Testa - I'm involved with Xanadu - and she is so sweet - not to mention her performance is always fresh and new.
I felt so bad for her though when I read that article in Playbill - she was banned from B'way for 12 years b/c of a casting director! (She would have made a GREAT Carlotta)
Side note - I want her to play Ursula! (a la Pat Carol)
#47re: Kerry Butler's Tony hopes?
Posted: 8/3/07 at 10:45pmWell, actually Curtain, two actors were nominated for The Lion King, so again, I don't see your point.
#48re: Kerry Butler's Tony hopes?
Posted: 8/3/07 at 10:48pmElphie, I completely agree with you on Mary Testa. I would also like to see her take over for Debra Monk in Curtains

Curtain, here is a list of nominated actors in Disney shows:
Susan Egan, Terrance Mann, Gary Beach, Samuel E. Wright, Tsidii Le Loka, Heather Headley, Rebecca Luker, and Gavin Lee! I think it's pretty unjust to say they aren't going to receive a nomination just because they are in a Disney show! You just dislike Disney so much and always compare every show to Tarzan just because it was a flop; Mermaid is no Tarzan, get over it!
