I love Jane but don't think she is a "known actress", most people don't know her by looking at her unless they watched Ally McBeal
I think they should get Catherine Zeta-Jones and dye her blond she's fierce. As long as no one mentions the possibility of Renee Zellwegger I think we'll be okay with the pick.
or... Natasha Richardson (wouldn't be my pick but hey)
or... can Julia Roberts sing and dance?? I'm sure she's taking a break after just having twins.
or... Jennifer Love Hewitt (I'm just kidding, please don't kill me, I was trying to think of a third and thought that would rile some of you up)
I'd say Catherine, Julia, and Natasha are too far on the wrong side of 30.
I think Rachel York would be a great canidate for The Producers.
However now they will be probably looking at Renee Zellweiger, which I hope does not happen.
I wonder if Anne-Nicole Smith is free LOL
But seriously, I would love all the musical movies to have their original Broadway casts... HOWEVER.. I am sure that we all agree, that if we want to keep them coming, they must be succesful in money terms, because that is all Hollywood producers are interested in. And I think Nicole's name would be a Box Office draw. And I do think that Nicole maybe wasn't the perfect choice, but it was far from the worst, after all, she is a brilliant actress ! I prefer a few alterations in the cast for commercial reasons, than having a film that will delight all us theater fans but be a box office bomb, which will result in the studios pulling the plug on musicals. This is only my point of view, I'd love to hear other opinions.
Take care
I wouldn't mind hearing Faith Hill sing the songs. Of course she's too old and maybe not an actress, but she's gorgeous and can actually sing. If they made a Miss Saigon movie, she'd be my pick for Ellen.
As Gower Champion says in one of MGM's most delightful and underrated musicals :
"Listen, do we NEED a star?"
"A star? Of course we need a star.."
"Who says so? This town is jumping with talented kids! If I can find someone who isn't afraid to work...I'd MAKE you a star! Just give me 24 hours! Phone the agents! Call the columnists! (runs to receptionist) Miss Leslie, phone the newspapers, give them this item: We're looking for a new girl to replace Nichole Kidman, er, Janet Hallston. A newcomer! we're gonna GIVE A GIRL A BREAK!"
ummm, why does she have to be under 30? that's ridiculous! most of the top grossing actresses are 30 or over. 30 is fairly young in this business. Plus age does not determine talent or sexiness. I didn't suggest actresses that were in there 50s and look it. Catherine Zeta-Jones does not look her age.

I agree with Victoria Grant. Rachel York would be perfect. She has the comic chops, the singing and dancing, and the looks. But she'll be doing DESSA ROSE at the Lincoln Center when THE PRODUCERS is filming. I wouldn't think she could double up like that, even though the movie is filming in NYC. Too bad.
Anyone is better than Kidman.
Ashley Olsen, anyone? :)
I'm prepared to get shot down for this, but what about Sarah Jessica Parker? I think I remember her or Matthew saying that they don't want to do films together, but I could see her in the part.
Haha. And MK can be her standby with a wig.
Ahh, Elphie, ya' beat me to it! I've thought all along that SJP would be a pretty good Ulla, especially opposite her husband.

I don't know about the under-30 "requirement." Where did that come from?
Anyway...I'm kind of glad this happened. I had a hard time seeing Kidman doing this role. I mean, even if you're optimistic and you assume she has the right figure and can do all the dancing- after Moulin Rouge, can you really picture her saying, "Now Ulla belt" and following through on it?
thank god. here's to sarah jessica!

...who's even skinnier than Kidman. Right.
I'm tired of Parker. Let's get creative!
Oh my goodness! Jane Krakowski would be a perfect replacement for this part. Hopefully they will pick another Broadway worthy person to round out the perfect Broadway cast that they have in the movie...
Minus Will Ferrel---but I love him no matter what.

I saw that headline and just screamed "YES!" and did a little celebratory dance. I hope they get Cady - or at least someone who's played Ulla before.
Wait, I just re-read this thread and my vote goes for Rachel York!

Okay... here are my picks.. 1. Brooke Shields (singer, dancer, is tall (statuesque), would look good blonde, likeable, sexy, can belt, is comedic); 2. Jane Krakowski (sexy, can belt, oh and did I mention sexy?), 3. Cady Huffman (proven dynamo), 4. Kerry Butler (her Audrey in recent Little Shop was fine, can act, belt), 5. Paris Hilton (okay I am joking.. a lot...), 6. Judy Dench (she is so good in EVERYTHING... (kidding...)... Oh how about Chris Rock... talk about casting against type! He's all wrong but put him in a blonde wig and at least (the very least) it would be entertaining...
1. Sarah Jessica Parker
2. Jane Krakowski
3. Jennifer Garner (got that one from All That Chat)
I think SJP would be great--the only reason I am sick of her right now is those GAP ads--really unfortunate choice. Does she need the exposure/money at this point??
wendy, some people can never get enough exposure/money.
