Knock your socks off college audition song?

Hi All, I hope you can help. My daughter will be auditioning for some seriously competitive Musical Theatre programs in the fall. She is looking for two great songs, songs that are lesser used and have a bit of energy. She wants a comedic/personality song and a ballad maybe that has a belt or two. She is a mezzo soprano and can hit the high notes but feels she really needs something that will help her to stand out. She is pretty much the brown hair/hazel eye, all American girl and if she can really knock it out of the park vocally, hopes she may earn one of those tough to come by spots in on of the top colleges. Any suggestions would be great. Finding many having to do with marriage and divorce, etc., not a lot for an older teenager, something more age appropriate.

Don't concentrate on "lesser used" - concentrate on songs that she can do real well. Also, some colleges have very specific requirements of a song from certain time periods (like before 1960). Reportedly, Megan Hilty auditioned with Corner of the Sky from Pippin - so there are no hard and fast "rules". The link is more about professional auditions and the problem with 16 bars - but the college audition is similar.
Your daughter's voice teacher is probably the best resource, as theoretically knowledgeable about your daughter's range and how to show her off - there also are college audition coaches who can help.

If she can sing Rosa Bud's confession from Drood then she should do that. Moonfall from Drood is also a great song. Really all of the music in Drood shows off the voice, and isn't overdone.

Thanks everyone, so many good suggestions. Her voice coach is fantastic but he seems to suggest songs that are just too old for her. She has gotten feedback that she needs more age appropriate material. I so appreciate the links and song suggestions!

I can't give specific song suggestions because I don't know her, but I highly recommend she read the book "I Got In" by Mary Anne Dennard. It's the ultimate resource for the college theatre and musical theatre audition process. Also, the boards on talk.collegeconfidential.com are amazing and can provide far more information than you could get here.

If you are in the position to be able to hire a coach I thoroughly recommend mtcollegeauditions.com, they are the greatest! Their Skype sessions work really well too if you are not near the city!

I wish we could hire a coach but we are really struggling right now. Im afraid its she and I hunting down a few great songs. Once we have them, I know she'll do great. Thanks again for all the help!

DebraRitter, I hate to be a downer, but theatre schools are very expensive, even with scholarships - unless you have an in-state school option. You are looking at close to or exceeding 50-60k per year, without scholarships or loans. I don't know the cost of the coach (my child refused when I offered it) - but between the college application costs, the travel costs for auditions (make plans now for the Unifieds)you already are spending money. The additional cost for the coach to help secure a spot in the competitive programs to which your daughter aspires is a relatively small investment. I understand you are really struggling, and perhaps that additional cost may seem too much extra. At least contact a coach and explore the cost - a few sessions to help select songs and monologues may be all that is necessary.

Oh believe me I know. I dont sleep much, haven't in over a year. That said, I promised myself I would support her and do everything I can to help her get there if this was her path. We have been in touch with MaryAnna Dennard (who we loved) and hope we can find a way for her to work a little with her. She has great grades, is insanely talented (I know I am her mom but no clue where she gets it) and I have to find a way to give her the shot. At this point, we are going in to it as if it will work out if she is accepted. I am hoping she can find some great audition material now so she can really master it before fall. If she gives it a 110% and gets in, I will do all I can to get her there. That said, I hope she can get merit scholarships and perhaps place in youngarts or spotlight awards, that would really help when applying. Thanks again for the kind words!
