I am curious - so I thought I'd ask.
Does anyone know how many octaves Kristin has in her voice? Or can someone make an estimation?
I've been wondering about this lately, so anyone know?

I was definetly thinking about 3 or 4.
I wonder if singers like Mariah Carey REALLY have a 5 octave range?

Posted: 6/10/05 at 11:32pmFrom what I've heard of her voice, three sounds about right...it's pretty good. Many people who supposedly have 4 octave ranges are greatly exaggerating.

Kristin has a 4 octave range. Her highest note in her usable range is an Eflat 3 octaves above middle C. I've never asked her what her lowest note is, but it's a good question.

I Googled it.

Posted: 6/10/05 at 11:33pmmariah only has a 5 octave range because she can go into her whistle register, which most people cant do. its not real singing (IMO)

I wouldn't doubt that Mariah has five octaves.
ETA: Actually, Kristin hit an E natural is "Steel Pier", and probably went even higher in "Candide".

The misunderstanding about 3/4 octave ranges that people have is how they count them.
Middle C to High C is ONE octave.
Middle C to an octave above High C is TWO octaves. Most everyone counts it as three since there are 3 C's "involved".

E THREE octaves about middle C?? Seriously?? Holy crap. That's an entire octave higher than my highest note, on my best day. You sing it, sistah!

yes, its an E....and to get technical...*pulls out her Harvard Dictionary of Music*... Middle C is the first ledger line below the treble staff. The next C is the 3rd space or Treble C, then the next C is "High C".....
"Middle C to High C is ONE octave. "
Middle C to High C is actually TWO octaves.

Posted: 6/11/05 at 12:45amThats weird, I thought high E was higher than that. when you sing it (i dont know how many colorturas there are out there) but the E at the end of POTO that Christine sings feels much higher than high C. You use a whole new way of singing, instead of normal head voice. The first time i hit it it didnt even feel like singing, but i dont think it was a "whistle" either.

"Middle C to High C is actually TWO octaves."
Which is why it's so randomly cool that Kristin can hold High C and crack her knuckles, one by one, simultaneously.

Posted: 6/11/05 at 12:50amI pulled out the phantom score to look. It is a High E natural. It may just feel higher because of your placement. I am a coloratura but I don't have a "whistle range".

Posted: 6/11/05 at 12:52amI just didnt realize it was just a couple ledgers above the staff. I definately dont know what a whistle range is i know i dont have it because Mariah Carey sounds completely different up high than I do.

Posted: 6/11/05 at 12:53amwell, its 3 ledger lines above the staff. lol yeah. i sound nothing like mariah carey. i don't particularly care for her *whistle range* which isn't even really a proper term.

Posted: 6/11/05 at 12:56amTheatreDiva -- Out of curiosity, is there a proper term for the "whistle range" and, if so, what is it?

This makes no sense - " Which is why it's so randomly cool that Kristin can hold High C and crack her knuckles, one by one, simultaneously."
Anyways. Superhead Voice is usually used instead of a whistle range. It is just a higher tessitura, agility, and light registration.

Kristin was on Letterman or some other late night show and, for no real reason, sang a high C while cracking her knuckles one by one. It just amused me.
Simple minds, simple pleasures. :)
