The article is essential a rebuttal of the Isherwood, Brantley, and Riedel. This is not to say I disagree with McNulty, because I think hes 100% right. When was the time a musical who's book is considered bad by even the nicest of critics, won Best Musical. In all honesty the only argument that can be made here is Lion King vs Ragtime, where production trumped musical. An American In Paris's production though is neither as inventive nor spectacular as The Lion King's.

Would Memphis count? I love that show, but I know there was a fair share of people who found it to be bland and boring.
Please keep in mind that the award for Best Musical is never given for the material, it's given for the overall production.

^ Exactly. Which is why this year may see Fun Home take book, score and director and An American In Paris take Musical.

I don't know if that holds. AIP is an adaptation of a film that was a jukebox musical. The idea isn't new. Memphis was entirely new.

And Memphis had almost no competition.

Memphis was eniterly new.
But as Michael Musto said on Theater Talk, Memphis 'ain't that original!'

The concept may not have been entirely original, however, Memphis was NOT a jukebox musical or based on a film. It was original in that sense (i.e., it was entirely eligible for book and score).

Fun Home may indeed take Best Score and Best Book but my guess is An American in Paris takes Best Director, Best Choreography and BEST MUSICAL. The best choreography and best director in this case is inseperable. Further, piling on against Craig Lucas' book is simply wrong headed, in my opinion. MOST critics DID NOT AGREE that it was "bad", it is simply not as formidable as the other major elements. And those on this BB that keep screaming about its "awfulness" are many of the same folks who missed the boat on this show all together. Oy!

I think AIP will take choreography, but not direction. The direction of Fun Home in Circle in the Square is genius, and unlike anything Broadway has ever seen before.
