Well, LoveMusik got good notices from the reading (unlike BOUNCE, a show that went through many titles and cast changes before it was staged in that unsuccessful try-out). I highly doubt that Murphy, Cerveris, Pittu, and Blazer singing the Weill songbook to a book written by Pulitzer-winning Alfred Uhry under the direction of Hal Prince could be worse than LEGALLY BLONDE.
The show opens in about a month so we'll see what it's like soon enough.

Good to hear that Legally Blonde lives up to its hype as being a fun and bubbly show.
Looking forward to seeing it.
Guys, Road Presenters are NOT the majority of Tony Voters. I think they only make up like 20-30 percent of the voting pool. However, all the othe "artsy" musicals may split the voters in NY, whiich would be good news for the most commercial show.
I have a feeling that there will be two artistic musicals (Spring Awakening and then EITHER LoveMusik or Grey Gardens) and two more populist musicals (Curtains and Legally Blonde, I predict, although Mary Poppins is still in the race).

Wanna Be A Foster
I think i have to disagree with most things you said
The show is ON FIRE and the score is a lot of fun and very catchy and addictive. The score matches the tone of the show its blatantly fun and unashamedly camp.
The Book is fast and sassy and never lets up for a second and the new ending(in the bathroom) is very funny.
Laura has star quality and commands the same every time shes on, shes in great voice and has great comic timing (her dance ability was great to)
The support cast are PERFECT ,they all get chance to shine and there isnt one weak link.
The show grabs you from the start and does not let go and never lets you forget what a great time your having.
You need shows like LB to balance out the Grey Gardens, spring Awakening etc and if these big fun shows are done well (LB is) then i welcome them with open arms.
The choreography is fun and fast but it could have been a bit better but jerry,s directing is spot on.
This WILL get nominated for best musical without a doubt(no one has even seen LoveMusik yet and just because they have a great cast crew etc means ****, so many shows with massive names have opened and failed).

Jeeze, it's already turning into the next Wedding Singer.
Too many posts shilling the show - from people who haven't even seen it!

" It will however receive a Best Musical nomination, as a nod to Kander & Ebb."
Bull****. It didn't affect the reviews, and it won't affect the noms. If it gets one, it's because the voters feel it's deserved for value/business/political reasons, the same as always. Don't overestimate the fact that the lyricist is dead - he died years ago, this is not Jonathan Larsen-sentimentality.
I hope I don't see that tired and inaccurate statement here again.

Wow - this is my first "Tony Season" here on the boards, and if it gets this heated before the nominations are even announced, I can't wait to see what May and June bring!
CURTAINS has as good a shot at winning Best Musical as any of the other leading contenders for the prize. Reviews don't mean jack when it comes to the Tonies - Tony history is littered with prize-winning shows that were ripped to shreds by the critics. Lest we forget, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE was not the recipient of gushing love letters. Nor was EVITA, folks, just to name two examples.
So far, CURTAINS is doing quite well at the box office, and at a fairly high ticket price. SPRING AWAKENING is also holding its own. It seems that LEGALLY BLONDE is poised to become a hit, if not a smash. Sadly, GREY GARDENS is struggling along, and LOVEMUSIK is still an unknown entity. Yes, Hal Prince is directing, and the stars are great, Kurt Weill is brilliant, but nothing is for certain. Prince has had more flops than hits in the last 20 years of his career, and very few people outside this board know or care who Kurt Weill, Michael Cerveris and Donna Murphy are.
LEGALLY BLONDE, which is after all the topic at hand, seems to be one of those shows that is taking on a life of its own, and I'm hoping it's a smash, with or without the good reviews it may or may not get. I'm hopeful that CURTAINS will do the same. There's room every season for the good, old fashioned crowd pleaser, which both of them appear to be.
As for the Tonies, I'm still holding to my own theory that it's still too early to tell, and that this season is going to be one of the most competitive, and therefore exciting, seasons in years.

Posted: 4/4/07 at 11:00amSounds like from talking to Rup and Foster, it's pretty much the same show with the "new" Love and War being the only big change and perhaps not for the better. I am absolutely disgusted that Orfeh is still shouting the end of Ireland in to an abyss. That's just wrong in every way. I am amused by all the best musical speculation when all of the contenders haven't even opened yet. My gut instinct tells me that while Blonde might very well be a crowd pleaser, it's not a sure shot for critical raves just because it got them in SF. I feel like, like it or not, it will have the same path as The Wedding Singer in many ways.

Posted: 4/4/07 at 11:04amNot a chance LB is a far superior show to Wedding Singer
#113re: LEGALLY BLONDE first preview
Posted: 4/4/07 at 11:11amThat's a sujective statement Danceman. While I never actually saw WS "in person", there were some far superior songs and choreography. Again, it's all subject to interpretation.

Posted: 4/4/07 at 11:37amWedding Singer was fun don't get me wrong but LB has a heart and a good story and i prefer the music in LB, wedding singer just seemed like it was trying to throw every 80s thing in to 2 hrs

All shows have faults ive never seen one what doesn't
I think LB is a great show but it does have its faults, a few of the songs are duff , they should not have replaced Love and War.
A few jokes fall flat, and they should be a bit more of a connection between elle and her potential guy.
The dogs are underused to haha

#118re: LEGALLY BLONDE first preview
Posted: 4/4/07 at 12:40pmOne BIG difference between WS and LB: WS had nowhere near the pre-opening hype that LB is getting, and whatever hype it had wasn't as fervent or as positive.

I do not see how saying CURTAINS may receive nominations as a "nod" to Kander and Ebb is such an inflammatory statement. I also don't think it's "tired" or "inaccurate." I became interested in seeing this show in the first place because it IS a Kander and Ebb show that I had never seen. I think a lot of people were attracted to it for the same reason...and there's nothing wrong with that. If the show is everything people who support it say it is, it will stand on its own and not rely on any kind of "sentamentality vote."
However, wanting to honor a team like K&E, recognize their contribution to musical theatre and express a little sadness that half of a wonderful partnership is no longer with us is normal...and, actually, kinda nice. So I don't see why this is such a volatile issue.
Demanding that people no longer express that view on the board isn't going to stop people from thinking it anyway.

Posted: 4/4/07 at 12:46pmI'm just saying that that statement has been made a lot around here, with the implication that that will be THE reason it received a nomination for Best Musical. I just think that's negative and unfair.
#121re: LEGALLY BLONDE first preview
Posted: 4/4/07 at 12:57pmYeah, Rath! You go girl! They won't get a nomination just because of a dead lyricist!

Rath, come on! This is a message board. People post their opinions, make all sorts of predictions (bizarre and otherwise), say whatever they think in whatever way they feel like, etc. You love this show so you say all sorts of things about it that other people wouldn't, and that's OKAY! Just let it go. Post and let post!
I have to go get ready now because I am going to see the matinee of CURTAINS in an hour!
