Posted: 10/17/07 at 6:52pmWasn't there another thread about this already? I guess flaunt felt compelled to start a new one with the same info. Now for something more interesting (to me) as far as all the itunes chatter, Orfeh is currently singing on both the Across The Universe soundtrack and the Legally Blonde *cast album*. I for one, think that's worth pointing out.

WaltSummersPI: "LB wasn't deemed worthy of a performance slot during the Broadcast."
Wasn't deemed worthy? No. It was not nominated for a Best Musical Tony and was therefore not allowed to perform a number on the show. Worthiness has nothing to do with it.

Posted: 10/17/07 at 9:39pmAs much as I love Legally Blonde, I do think it was rightfully denied a place to perform. Not all Broadway shows can do a segment, or just the performances alone would last about 3 hours, and there are still awards and commercials.

Posted: 10/17/07 at 9:46pmwell...this is getting slightly off-topic; but I think that all (or almost all) or the new musicals and revivals should be allowed to perform. They need to stress the excitement of the performances and get an exciting new host for the awards.

Well...a whole 2 of those 12 million watched it at my house and we hated it.
The whole MTV marketing aspect of the show kinda backfired on us. I wonder how many others who watched it will not buy tickets because of what they saw?
"We just saved a couple hundred dollars on Legally Blonde tickets....and we didn't even have to switch to GEICO!! WOOHOO!"

Well I am just enjoying knowing this is working for them. And watching all the armchair producers/marketing directors squirm!

Posted: 10/18/07 at 10:21amUpon quick glance at your post I thought Flaunt it said "well, i enjoy working for them". Seems more like what actually should have been said. :). On a serious note, how do they figure there were what, 7 people per household? How does 1.2 million homes translate into 12 million viewers? Meanwhile a bunch of my friends were at the show yesterday, both matinee and evening (not the same group at both) and were shocked at how empty the theater was. Also Bundy was out for both shows.

"Just because the telecast reached that many people doesn't mean much as all those people saw the show for free."
Well, the last time I checked, cable is NOT free. MTV may not be a premium channel, but you are still paying for it. Unless of course you downloaded it or watched it at a friend's house.

People pointing out whether they did or didn't like the show and how that points out the flaw in the showing are missing the point entirely. The hope is to expose the people to the project -- obviously there's a risk involved in that in that some people might not like it. Duh. It doesn't prove or disprove the validity of showing it because a) other people probably watched it and enjoyed it and b) no one goes in expecting to show something and have it be universally enjoyed.
The marketing goals for the showing are probably bigger than just selling tickets to the Broadway production anyway, as many people who see it who aren't close to NYC or who don't go to musicals regularly would be more interested in the eventual touring production as well as the eventual DVD release. The goose in sales of the cast album in the last week or so is probably a better sign that the MTV viewing reached new audiences, more than people on theater boards reaction.

The bump in CD sales/legal downloads is very exciting. It shows many people watched and enjoyed it. Plus, MTV will air it again and again (and if it is popular, again and again), which can only mean great things for Broadway in general.

Posted: 10/18/07 at 2:52pmI bet you all, if MTV shows another musical, it's going to be either Spring Awakening(the edited for TV version) or Wicked.

^^^ Hmmm idk JulesReverie, I can see Spring Awakening...sorta, but I don't think Wicked would happen. I mean wicked is probably one of the most well known current broadway show. I just don't think it needs the extra advertising. I mean theres already like 50 sit down productions. LOL.

Posted: 10/18/07 at 11:31pmI think it was really smart to do. there are so many people outside of NYC who don't even have Broadway on their radar... so, while this may not lead to immediate ticket sales, it's probably great for word of mouth in the long run....
