Hello all. I read this amusing little bit on theatre behavior. I feel your pain, Michael. It's from the Village Voice online. from RC in Austin, Texas

I certainly agree with Michael Musto when it comes to the annoying, obligatory standing ovation at the end of every show. One has to stand in order to see the actors during curtain calls. It didn't used to be that way and I'm speaking from 58 years of theatregoing experience. Standing ovations had to be earned and were extremely rare, like the one for George C. Scott at the end of his gut wrenching performance in DEATH OF A SALESMAN decades ago. I can still remember it. The standing ovation is somewhat connected to the throngs of young people who hang around the stage door waiting to not just get an autograph but to talk and be photographed with an actor. There have always been "autograph hounds" but these days it has reached a ridiculous degree.

And while I agree with him whole-heartedly, it's nothing we, ourselves, haven't all talked about here countless times.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Standing ovations and screamed "Bravos" drive me a bit nutty as well.

'Take me out tonight where's there's music and there's people and they're young and alive.'
