However, she is dead wrong here. And she's compounding the problem by doubling down on that nonsense.
I wish she would just remove the video and have done with it. No one, NO ONE deserves to be automatically applauded. Not Patti LuPone, or the Merm, or the Lunts, or the Queen of England.
I'm shocked the producers haven't asked her to take it down. It's insulting to the paying audience.
Here's what you get if you pay to see She Loves Me: you get to pay upwards for 100 bucks, you get to see a show, and you get to be sarcastically mocked by one of its stars on social media. No thanks."
If you've truly been that affected by her video, why don't you tweet her yourself and request that it be taken down?

It's also not the worst thing in the world. She's obviously not going to take it down, and the producers aren't going to ask her to. The few on this website are probably the only ones still thinking about this. Just forget about it?
Can you all ****ing stop comparing her to performers who would "NEVER do this"? You. Don't. Know. Actors. Personally. Laura is Laura. Nobody else. Somebody PLEASE lock this thread.
They/them.

Bull sh!t. You don't get applause for simply taking the stage. You get applause for delivering a performance worth applauding. If a performance goes above and beyond expectations, then you earn a standing ovation.
This isn't a bunch of seven year olds playing little league badeball. Not everyone gets a trophy. If you take the stage and you want applause, earn it. If the reaction wasn't what you hoped for, try something different next time.
HOW is this debate still going on? Some people think you should always clap, some people think you don't have to. Laura has the right to share her perspective on it just as everyone in this thread is doing. Neither opinion is right or wrong. If you don't want to go and see a Laura Benanti show now then don't, but I don't think she'll struggle to find paying (and applauding) audiences.
Well I for one, think that she was joking, kinda. I say "kinda" because whenever I get embarrassed by something (in her case, the lack of applause) I make a mildly passive-aggressive joke. It's no big deal, but why not clap? Those people just sang/acted under hot stage lights for 2.5 hours, but no big deal, like others have said, the audience isn't obligated too. It's just kind of a tradition. Tra-dit-ion.
I don't really care one way or the other about this but I enjoy following Laura on Twitter and she made mention of people not applauding with a similar quip about a week ago. So this has been brewing.
As of last night she's still tweeting about it being a joke and people being able to take a joke. I don't think that it's helping with those who don't think it's funny. She should just give it up and let the whole thing die.
It's been clarified that she was joking, and this morning we had to remove several inappropriate posts that came in overnight (centered around off-stage gossip about another performer). Let's move on please.
