Calm down. All you did is a musical

Who knows who she is even talking to? After sleeping on it, I was just thinking that the show could have more tony voters lately. I used to be a merch girl and traveled with a lot of bands and they would always be effected when we were in the bigger cities because it was full of industry people in the front who don't "feed the performance". Maybe they are stuck with that type right now. I have a feeling she's talking to industry people and not hard working ticket buyers.

This is 'league week' where all the road tony voters and their staff come in and see all the shows- performances that week are bursting to the seams with industry folk
Again, I simply ADORE Benanti, which is one of the reasons I found this video to be so off putting.
You are not entitled to applause. You know how Mary Martin and Ethel Merman made sure people clapped for them? By being GOOD.
If someone chooses not to clap, that is their business, IMO.

I always applaud, even if I didn't like the show and/or performances. I just think it's the right thing to do. That said, Laura didn't do herself any favors with the video. It may have been a joke, but it was in poor taste.

Eh, I thought it was funny and didn't overthink it.
I don't applaud after every song. I do after some, but in most cases, I don't like to pull myself out of the story and separate the performers onstage from the character in the story. Sure, big solos, big production numbers, of course, some songs and performances ask for it, but "I'm Not That Girl (Reprise)" doesn't need to grind the show to a halt.
I always applaud at curtain call. I don't always stand.

You are incredibly passionate about this video. There's other people in this thread who disagree with what she's saying but aren't railing against her this much. Is it really that big of a deal? I promise you most people were nowhere near as offended as you seem to be.
I don't know. I do like her. I just wish she would do the right thing and take that video down.
That's all I have to say on the subject.

Well it's your opinion that that's the right thing. Most people on Twitter have no problem with it.

Not to be rude but if your following her on Twitter your a fan, so of course most people don't have a problem with it!

I also like her A LOT- I'm just bothered that I feel like she is a hypocrite. Her comments in the Times last week bothered me, and her annoyance at lack of applause when she last week said 'calm down, all you did is a musical' is quite the conundrum.
agreed, take it down rather than proclaim victory over trolls

Well it's her Twitter account for her fans. Therefore, if she wants to post something that doesn't offend the vast majority of the people viewing her Twitter then she can.
The arguement can be made that this is Benanti's style of humor therfore it should be viewed as a joke... what about the actors who are retweeting this? Are they all in on the joke too?

Laura said last night (in a now deleted tweet) that it was meant to be an amusing way to talk about theatre etiquette. Some people's opinions clearly differ on what theatre etiquette entails. Others (including those performers) agree with her and thought it was amusing. Not that big of a deal.
"If you're not going to applaud for me stay home and jerk off".
Kind of a big deal. Very vulgar, ugly and nasty to people who've paid a lot of money to see her show. If I were the producers, I would ask her to remove the video.

I have to wonder how you get through life if you're so offended by her masturbation reference.

I don't think Bernadette Peters would do a video telling people to go home and jerk off if they don't want to applaud.

Good job Laura isn't claiming to be a Bernadette Peters impersonator then!

She talks about theatre etiquette, I'm talking about performer etiquette. Whatever happened to class.

So is it a joke or an actual discussion? Maybe there is a reason that tweet is deleted...
I agree- its not a big deal, just an interesting discussion... I personally dont understand why an actor would feel the need to post (or retweet) on social media that they are entitled to recive applause...

I totally understand what you're saying here. I just think the context of the comment is just not classy or befitting a great Broadway star like Laura Benanti.
Merman and Martin would never say something like that. Nor Angela Lansbury or Dotty Loudon.
It just really did not sit well with me. Obviously. haha.

Funny, the same question was asked of those who disagreed with Laura earlier in this thread.
Opinions are a funny thing.
This does not surprise me. She has always come across as extremely arrogant to me.
