Does anyone know what Laura Michelle Kelly has been up to lately? I discovered the Stiles & Drewe Peter Pan recording today and think she made a great Wendy (with Sheila Hancock as the narrator/old Wendy).
I loved her in My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins and Lord of the Rings, and she should become a permanent fixture on the West End stage. Has she been in anything since the Old Vic revival of Speed-the-Plow?
This is the story I gathered from various sources: after refusing to renew her contract with the London show, and subsequently be involved in the Broadway transfer, it looks like she has been pretty much blacklisted from any jobs for the Big 4 - Cameron Mackintosh, Really Useful Group, Bill Kenwright and Stage Entertainment.
I would've loved her to play Julie Jordan in the Carousel revival, and maybe take a stab at Nancy in Oliver but I doubt it will happen.
I'm doing some reading on the S&D Festival Hall Peter Pan concert, and noticed that LMK's two younger brothers, Nathanael and Jorim, played John and Michael Darling, respectively, to her Wendy.
What an incredible experience for all three - and what great chemistry their performance would've had.
Unfortunatly she did rather "p" off Cameron with Mary Poppins - he gave her a gem and she decided to try for a "pop" career instead of taking it to Broadway. She was a perfect Poppins and sadly, if she did go with Cameron she would be a very big West End star at the moment - with roles falling at her feet.
She is doing the workshops with Ghost and seems very keen to progress with this project as it aims for a West End opening Spring/Summer 2010
seriously though...she didn't wanna do Poppins on Broadway, so she gets blacklisted by every west end producer. seems rather childish and immature. its her perogative, she didn't wanna go to new york, i don't see why anyone would deny a very talented woman a role because she dared go against mr cameron "i think im god of theatre" makintosh!
She is seriously hard to work with and has repeatedly upset most producers / performers etc she has come into contact with. That, and her constant bible bashing. have made her a rather unpopular lady of late.
Originally she WAS going to take MP to B'way, then some over opportunities came up in this country, and she pulled out on Cameron last minute, literally a day or so before the contracts were due to be signed!
In my experience she is a lovely lady, myself and Musical-Matt met her after LOTR one day, at the start of it's run, so we were 14/15? at the time... I cant remember when it opened now! And after her asking and us and discovering we were walking back to waterloo alone at night, she insisted we waited another 5 minutes while she signed autographs and she would walk us back to waterloo to make sure we were safe! Something she didnt have to do, and most wouldnt, she was very pleasant and more than happy to answer any questions we had, a very nice TALENTED woman in my experience, and I hope she does still have some wondeful oppertunities ahead of her!
It wasn't first hand sources, but I rather understood that she wasn't generally too popular when she was doing LOTR either. But I don't know why that was.
As far as "Ghost" is concerned, Baz Bamigboye said that she didn't just do rhe workshops, she is actually officially now attached to it. The only person to yet be so, where the others who did the workshops were specifically said not to be going to be involved.
'And after her asking and us and discovering we were walking back to waterloo alone at night, she insisted we waited another 5 minutes while she signed autographs and she would walk us back to waterloo'.
Did you get her phone number?
I could not imagine Cameroon to be a grudge man.
Who on earth would turn a chance to star in a production on Broadway............Not me sir.
I believe the main thing that people are leaving out with regards to her not doing Poppins on Broadway was that she was due to go right from the London production directly to the Broadway one literally back to back. She had wanted to take some time off between the two and Cameron said no to that, that it was either you go do the show on Broadway right after you final contractual bow in London, or you don't get to go at all.

According to jess20882 (who apparently works at Broadway's Mary Poppins), Laura Michelle Kelly will be reprising her role as the title character on Broadway following Scarlett Strallen's exit in October. re: The next Mary Poppins on Broadway will be...anyone??
Although I highly doubt she would be the second replacement of a role she should've originated, if it is true I will definitely be flying to New York early next year to catch it (as well as Night Music with CZJ & La Lansbury)
