Lea DeLaria to Co-Star with Andrea McCardle in MAME

When I told DeLaria she'd done a good job after a performance of Chicago her response was "Well, yeah. It's how I make my living!"
If you don't mind taking it as it turns out, it's a fine, fine LIFE!

I'm almost embarrassed to say that when I saw On the Town, I had no idea who Lea DeLaria was. But I loved that performance! LOVED! It wasn't until I read the Playbill the next day (which I do all too frequently), I realized who she was.

I'm right across the river from the Bucks County Playhouse and I'll be there!

By the way, while I didn't see it, I've had a number of people tell me that Andrea McCardle was very touching and wonderful in Mack and Mabel a couple years ago! I wouldn't have cast her in that in a million years either.

"Seriously, that is ALL she is."

Perhaps in Rocky Horror, and I'll take your word for it since I saw her understudy and you saw a much larger sample of Rocky performances than I did. But it's not all she is outside of that very particular show.

I was gonna say that same.

She was very shouty...but that whole production was very loud (as it should have been). But she certainly wasn't like that in ON THE TOWN.

I happen to think DeLaria is talented. She really moved me in The Edge of Seventeen. And I happen to like her I Can Cook Too. She is just a miserable human being and alientates almost everyone she works with. She is nasty, thoughtless and self involved. Her attitude has destroyed what could have been quite a good career.

Just look at what she said to Fine Life above. It says everything.

On the other hand, there's the show part of show business and I know how hard it can be for people to leave the insidery stuff out of the assessments of a show like the upcoming "Mame," but it might be a good idea.

Is insidery the word you mean?
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I completely agree. But when it comes to Delaria, the last thing she should be doing is musical theater. She might be very talented in other areas, but this one ain't for her.

I know how over-the-top she can be, so I'm not arguing with you, Jordan.

But I swear I saw her play a jealous wife in BOYS FROM SYRACUSE about 15 years ago in which she sang beautifully, was appropriately tough but still feminine, and held her own with clowns like David Hyde Pierce and Jason Graae without ever over-playing.

In short, she was a revelation. So she CAN do musical theater. The question is whether she WILL? (I should add that it was a limited run, so maybe she never got bored with it.)

(I also heard she could be difficult, but at that time most of her ire seems to have been directed at herself. Apparently she was very insecure.)

What Henrik said. Well written. from RC in Austin, Texas
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

Dear Goth,

You made me laugh.

Dear Rob,

Your site is so much better than Gaveston.

Dear Lea,

Good luck with Mame, ignore the people who don't know how to keep backstage backstage.

Dear Sal,

I took your jockstrap.

I'm thinking a Catherine Zeta-Jones/Parker Posey season

CZJ as Mame/Parker as Vera

CZJ as Sally/Parker as Phyllis

CZJ as Violet/Parker as Daisy

CZJ as Max/Parker as Leo

Agree with most of this. She's quite talented but uneven, especially emotionally. She can often go out of her way to be aggressive and abrasive but can also very sweet -but you never know which Lea you'll meet on any given day.

Actually, she did some great vocal work in Rocky, especially as Eddie, but as I said, she can be very uneven . I'd see this for the casting alone,
