The show is pure camp. I know it people know it. I don't think the show knows it. It tries to have the message of don't judge a book by its cover. But, it totally throws that message away with just one simple brief exchange between Elle and Emmett. Right before the song "take it like a man" Elle is making cracks about Emmett's looks to which he replies " Didn't your mother ever teach you to not judge a book by its cover?" And Elle's response to that is " Books with dirty covers stay on the shelfs longer."
If you want to really read into that ( which I did) it is saying that like it or not people are going to judge you by your looks. Which did away with the entier message in Act one which was that you can get what you want regardless of looks.
Even though it is a small thing it still irks me. They are trying to come off here on Broadway at least. As a show that has an important message instead of just being a fun campy show. If it tried to be a fun campy show which it is. Then I would be okay with it.
