I haven't heard what the ratings were for MTV's broadcast(s). Saturday afternoon was probably low - plus many (including us) just DVRd it for later viewing.
And of course, I haven't heard anything about the box office impact if any on future sales.

Weekly cable ratings come out on Wednesdays, I believe.
I know that Nielsen is apparently now counting dvr usage in the ratings for broadcast shows, anyone know if the same applies to cable?
(eta: nevermind, I finally found it on the Nielsen website- they do also calculate 'live + sd' when figuring cable ratings, sd = same day (before 3am the following day) dvr playback)

Posted: 10/15/07 at 2:52pmWell, MTV has relatively low ratings so the starting point is going to be low. And I don't expect this was some blockbuster ratingswise. The trick is that the people who do watch are probably 95% women and no doubt under 24 years old. The core LB audience. If you broadcast it on PBS, for contrast, I bet the audience would be 95% old people. I'm sure the average age of a regular PBS viewer is 60+. Not the core LB audience.

Posted: 10/15/07 at 11:43pmThey now calculate DVR ratings as Live + 7, meaning the DVR rating is only counted if the program is watched within the first 7 days of recording. How they know you have watched it, I don't know. According to TvGuide.com, the DVR ratings come out one week after regular ratings. Given MTV is on cable and has a much smaller viewer base, I can't imagine their DVR rating is going to improve much. As an example, Grey's Anatomy only gained 2 million extra viewers so one would think an MTV program would probably only gain 100,000 at most.

Posted: 10/16/07 at 12:07amAnyone have this on DVD? I was doing a show this past weekend and I haven't had time to see it, and I didn't get to tape it because I don't have that capability. So, if anyone would be kind enough to send me a DVD that'd be awesome, and much appreciated.

fyi for those who were wondering and didn't see it yet...
And MTV was pleased with the debut of "Legally Blonde: The Musical," as Saturday's afternoon preem averaged 1.27 million viewers and drew more persons 12-34 than any other program in its timeslot.

I would have expected that but I don't see 1.27 million viewers translating into big theater box office. With thanksgiving around the corner, all box office will spike but I'm sure the Blonde producers will conveniently credit the MTV special.

While I agree that PBS probably doesn't attract a lot of the LB core audience, I do wonder what the PBS core audience actually is, and where one would find such information. My personal impression of their core audience does not include a lot of 60+ folks. All the old people I know watch mostly game shows, old movies and Lawrence Welk. My feeling is that PBS draws mostly educated 30-50 year olds.

Posted: 10/17/07 at 9:40amOf course they're going to spin it that way Bree and then we have to endure 10 more threads on the ratings of Legally Blonde on MTV and how the show is going to run for DECADES to come because of it. Makes me want to take a nap :). There's no real competition for that time slot, so I'm sure it was a deliberate move on MTV's part so they could "win" with the 12-34 year olds.

That figure is only for one showing of the broadcast and does not include people who recorded it but dont watch it in 7 days.
I think the box office will spike for a few weeks thanks to it but as Bree says i think its going to more down to thanksgiving, xmas etc.

Considering it would take two years for people to actually see the show live, that isn't bad. Especially since most people don't sit around at home on a Saturday afternoon.
