Thanks for clearing that up wanna be a foster
But i have to say that whilst i agree about Mary Poppins i cant help thinking LB will take a slot in the 4 nominations.
Munkustrap did you not like LoveMusik?
As Shira pointed out, the only out-and-out "rave" Ben Brantley offered was about the DOGS. I would say that's "negative."
(I am pleaseed by his shout-out to Leslie Kritzer...who should be good since she played the same basic role in THE GREAT AMERICAN TRAILER PARK MUSICAL, but with hilarious results.)
I am very torn on LOVEMUSIK. I still don't know. I certainly liked it, but the fact that I liked has little to nothing to do with it's quality.
So, I know I liked it - but I'm still trying to figure out if it was good.
Well, the shows that I would say are up for grabs for the four slots are:
CURTAINS
SPRING AWAKENING
MARTIN SHORT: FAME BECOMES ME
LOVEMUSIK
GREY GARDENS
At least two of these need to be knocked out to include LEGALLY BLONDE or MARY POPPINS. The Nominating Committee knows that if they nominate LEGALLY BLONDE or MARY POPPINS that they will win. They also know that there are shows this season that deserve the title of Best Musical over either of those commercial dreams. I don't see them making room for either LB or MP over what are essentially better shows.
well when you have figured out i would love to hear your thoughts
I always find it strange when i leave the theatre not knowing if i liked a show or not out and out.It normally makes for the most interesting nights though
and i have question. what the hell is so wrong with young girls likeing a show? some of you queens act like haveing someone 12-14 likeing a show geared towards them is so wrong.
Would have to agree that the NYT review isn't positive.
Harris, if it's a good piece of theatre that's geared toward tweens, like HAIRSPRAY for example, then people embrace it.
If it's a show geared toward tweens that is a big tired mess, then people have problems with it.
The problem, Harris, is that BLONDE seems to be geared ONLY towards young girls.
As Foster said, WICKED, HAIRPSRAY, etc. are all in the same boat - but even those shows appeal to larger groups of people.

i agree with Brantley's review, & i say that as someone who enjoyed the show.
The times review was mixed , its not his thing but he thinks it will satisfy what he sees as its target audience (i have to disagree the show is a mess, far from it).
As a friend who works in a show in new york described it its Camp fluff at its best.
and Brantley gave MAMA MIA a positve review.
well from what i can see this is how its gone so far
Negative-2
Mixed-2
positive -3
oh and word of mouth was positive(erm shocker)
Not a bad night so far
Wow; the reviews that have been churned out have been a lot harsher than I expected.
Will the show still be a hit? Or will it have a decent run and close quietly? I think that's up in the air right now...
I was sure it would be a hit because I was sure reviews would be mixed to positive but these are mostly mixed to negative...the show is not perfect at all but doesn't deserve to be trashed like some of these critics have been trashing it.
I still think a Best Musical nod is inevitable, though.
I must say, I am pleased that Leslie Kritzer was singled out in four major reviews, even in her very small role. Let's hope the future holds a star turn in a new show for her.
but munk and foster so what
not every book written is going after everyone as there target group, correct? not every movie made is for everyone, not every rock, pop, opera etc song is going to be everyone cup of tea.
im saying there are are few of you, and i'm not saying you two, that are acting like OMG A SHOW FOR YOUNG GIRLS it;s the end of the world.
I wouldn't say the Best Musical nod is inevitable, per se (mostly because I don't want to jinx it), but it's certainly a good possibility. At this point I think Grey Gardens and Spring Awakening are the only two that are pretty much a given -- the other slots are up for grabs.

what was the info on fox news?
I think Brantley is on to something. I would love to see Ms. Kritzer play Elle. (Okay, I admit it: I would love her in anything she does!)
Harris, books and movies don't cost $111.50 per person.
Harris007 i think what they are saying is that the fact the advertising etc is aimed at young girls etc it could hurt the show.
Once inside you can see that this show is not just aimed at that audience but at everyone who enjoys a fun night at the theatre, Girls ,boys, men, women, gay, straight can enjoy this show but the show is very much billed as a show for youngsters
I'm pretty sure the show is an established hit by now. Playing to 90% capacity during previews and getting mixed reviews (with some major, like Variety, being positive), I'm sure that it'll at least recoup. As WICKED has kept proving from season to season, you don't need a rave from The New York Times to make it on Broadway anymore.
Eh, not a fan of Ms. Kritzer.
Anyway...regarding the fangirls. Wanna Be A Foster, when you met me, I thought Sutton Foster and anything Wicked was to DIE for. Now, I've grown up and learned quite a bit about musical theatre and no longer think they're gods gift to theatre, but hey, to each his own.
Yeah, they're expensive. But regardless of price, they're going to the theatre, and is that such a bad thing? And many people are attending this, not just 13 year old girls.
Give it all a chance. And I mean this to ALL, not just one person.
Playing to 96 97 percent capacity is great, its done better in previews than LoveMusik, Pirate Queen, Curtains etc i think that is a sign that this show has a long life and the good reviews are outweighing the bad ones so far so thats going to help.
I know some people have said they hear Bat Boy in the musical but I do not even hear the same chord in any songs.
