neither do i , i have no idea where they have got that from
I am guessing that Rosie was at the opening tonight. Someone asked her on her blog how the show was and she said it was wonderful....hmm hopefully a performance pops up on "The View."

The problem, Harris, is that BLONDE seems to be geared ONLY towards young girls.
Wrong. I am not young and I am not a girl and I enjoyed it very much.
You're missing the point.
I never said that only young girls can enjoy it. Ever. It's geared towards them. Clearly others can enjoy it, but it's GEARED towards them.
HAIRSPRAY is also different because...well...it's almost flawlessly written.
Wickedrocks, I dont know why you said what you said. The reviews are not awful and are swaying more towards the positive. THis show didn't get panned. I would say its averaging a lukewarm feeling, but people are right - this show is most likely critic proof.
Filling the Palace is not an easy feat and this show has managed to do it since previews began. That's good news.
I have to agree with munk
The show is advertised to attract a young female/gay audience but once inside its defiantly a show that appeals to everyone.
As much as a love hairspray i cant say its almost Flawlessly written, Like LB it has some weak moments as well as some weak songs.
and as for reviews, like i said
Negative 2
Mixed 2
Positive 3
the reviews have leaned more towards positive

I went to "LB" fully expecting to HATE it. The demo of the opening number posted on the SF "Best of Broadway" website made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, and not in a good way. I expected it to be another "Lestat" and I had no desire to see it. I was practically dragged to the show for my birthday and I'm so glad that I went. It was fun. After a hard day at work, I was able to relax and have a good time at the theatre. I went to see it a couple of additional times and I'd go again. I don't think it will matter one bit what the Times says about the show. It's going to do well.

songanddanceman2- There are only two positive.
Why do you care so much about a show you have never seen?

I would hardly say Brantley was negative. It was a lot better than I expected from him and pretty mixed.
What do you mean you "don't know why I said what I said"?
It's not like I'm screaming and freaking out because the show is going to be a huge failure...which I don't think it will.
I simply said these reviews are harsher than I expected (which..they are) and that I wonder how the show will hold up after these reviews. Shows at the Palace usually either need raves, Tonys, or a gigantic fanbase to keep them going. Whether or not LB will find any of these is still up in the air.
And, as far as how the show has been doing so far, I DO remember All Shook Up at the Palace filling it to near full capacity before the reviews came out...and then...well, I think the highest it reached for a while was in the mid 70's and it was pretty much at home in the 50 and 60% range for quite some time...and it had a marketable name like ELVIS to it's credit...
I'm wondering if the same thing will happen to LB.
It's a reasonable thought, IMO...
Anyway, Im going to bed...here's hoping the rest of the reviews will be positive.

i liked Brantley's comment "imagine HELLO DOLLY! with Shirley Jones instead of Carol Channing"...its apt, & i dont think of it as a hurtful insult.
& the empty calories made me all the more hungry for the nutrition of LOVEMUSIK.
& again, disclaimer: i say these things as someone who enjoyed LEGALLY BLONDE & i know that its a hit regardless of what any of us say or think.
ALL SHOOK UP was papering the show all throughout previews, as was LEGALLY BLONDE. That's why the percentages were so high. The next few weeks will tell how many paying audience members will actually flock to the show.

It's nice to have a place to come and find all of these reviews, but I bet this show is review/critic proof anyway.
And after seeing it last week, I have to say, I am quite depressed over the state of musical theater.
The fact that Sweeney Todd barely squeaked out a year (did it make it that long?) and this will probably run for 5 makes me sad. The fact that Company's box office is in the gutter and a show like Curtains is going to get nominated for a Tony makes me sad. The fact that a show like Pirate Queen, as flawed as it may be, received some of the most vicious notices I've ever read (to the point where this very site felt it necessary to go after it again two weeks after their official reviews came out???) and Hairspray and Mama Mia are still going strong makes me sad.
Sometimes I feel like a fish out of water on these boards. And when I walk through Time Square.
But that's just me.
Good luck Legally Blonde. Not that you'll need it.

Put on some skates, and you may soon find yourself a home in the upcoming LITTLE MERMAID, Ms. Fish.
What's wrong with Hairspray. Because it's fluff? It shouldn't matter if a show is fluff or serious. If it's well done, it desrves to run long.
And if Legally Blonde makes you sad for the state of musical theatre, then I can't imagine what shows like Lestat, In My life, etc. did to you.

The papering for Blonde was not too out of the ordinary Foster, and the grosses go to show that...

Foster- maybe because it's late and I'm sleepy, but I didn't get the "skates...mermaid" comment?
Wonderful Wizard- Lestat made me sad too. Such high expectations. And I didn't get to see In My Life. But I understand from people whom I trust that it too might have hurt. And as for Hairspray, I was never more uncomfortable in a theater in my life. Call me crazy, but even though it's "fluff" as stated by you, I was aching for just one honest moment. And oh, all that color! But I have to admit, all the people around me were having a great time.

If you are so depressed with the state of musical theater then do something about it. Have you written anything? I think not (I could also be wrong) However, this buisness is about making money...if it won't sell tickets it won't last. End of story. At this point I think Legally Blonde will pick up a fan base and have a healthy run. Can I say it will run for 20 years as Phantom is doing? No....but I can say it won't flop like Lestat....

Well, it seems like you have some bias against the more "fluffy" shows. I agree with you, it sucks that shows like Sweeney and Journey's End, which got such great reviews struggle at the box office, while some shows are sold out for the year.

BwayBound- I wish I could write a show, but alas, I have no talent in that department. I'll leave that to the pros. I just wish the pros whose work I seem to have an appreciation for would write more. (Sondheim, Jason Robert Brown, Adam Guettel, Flaherty/Ahrens). But I understand what you're saying. If you don't like something, do something about it. I'm trying to do so in politics, so I'll have to leave the musical theater writing to those who've studied the craft.

Foster: Comps are not taken into consideration when coming up with the show's grosses. it's PAID attendance, only.
That's why, generally, the week a show opens, the %'s are very low.
People keep saying this show is critic proof, but for god's sake, the Times hasn't even been delivered yet. There's no way you can insist the reviews will have no impact on the show's success when it only opened LAST NIGHT. Maybe in 6 months or so you can start making those claims, but it is entirely too soon.

skittles- the people who are going to go see Legally Blonde don't read the New York Times.

Skittles, The Times review is up...
