Posted: 4/1/09 at 11:57pmLooking forward to read the feedback from the UK. Its one of my favorite new musicals from the last few years. I'm excited for the tour coming to Seattle this Fall, I think. I find the score fresh and innovative and Mitchell's staging (he's repeating it here correct?) winning.

And the Savoy that is there now is a rebuild, after the disastrous fire in 1990. The theater - as the name implies - goes back to the Gilbert and Sullivan age. Richard D'Oyly Carte, the G&S producer, built the theater as part of the hotel of the same name, with a killer view of the Thames. Many of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas debuted there, including Iolanthe, The Mikado and The Gondoliers.
It is owned by Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal

The Savoy was build by Sir Richard D'Oyle Carte who was the producer of all the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. He build a theatre for them to be staged, that theatre is the Palace on Shftesbury Ave (home to 'Priscilla-The Musical) at the moment). The Palace was originally called The Royal English Opera House and with the huge amount's of money from the G and S productions staged there he build the Savoy Theatre and moved the shows there and that is when the G and S operas became known as The Savoy Operas.
The Savoy was the first theatre in the world to be lit by electricity!
The entire building of The Savoy Theate was destroyed by an overnight fire in 1988. Rebuild slowly with private money and funds from the hotel it was returned to more than its former glory but is stil regarded as one of Londons least attractive theatres auditorium wise.

Posted: 4/2/09 at 7:09pmOn my first night in London, I saw Fiddler On The Roof at the Savoy Theatre. It's honestly not the best theatre for it. It the shape/depth/stage area I'm worried about. Not at all worried of the marquee.
