re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

Contracts mean little as it will always be 'run of show' anyways.

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

haha you are right, Grease is touring at the end of this year through early 2010, as is Saturday Night Fever which starts this year

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

Just been on Whatsonstage forum and people are saying Sheridan Smith has signed the contract to play Elle and it will be announced in the next few weeks.
Also Duncan James is playing Warner...
Anyone know if there's any truth to this?

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

She has signed.
She was wanted for the 'Little Voice' revival this Winter but had already been done for 'Legally Blonde'!

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

For those of us not from the UK, who are Duncan James and Sheridan Smith?
#33

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

Duncan James was in a pop group called Blue, they were pretty popular in their hey day. I think he was in Chicago a year or so ago also..?
Sheridan Smith is an actress who is popular for being on a series called 2 Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps... she's done a few other comedy series and played Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors in London (which I thought she was great in!).

You know, I can actually see Duncan as Warner..
And I do think it will do really well here.

SADM2, just reading this thread, how did you get on with your audition?

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

Duncan James is from a boyband called 'Blue' and is pretty damn cute! He made his West End debut a few years ago as Billy Flynn in 'Chicago'.

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

Sheridan Smith is know to TV audiences in 'Two pInts Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps'. Sheridan is best known to theatre people as Audrey in the Meniers production of 'Little Shop' last year. She has done extensive other stage and TV work.

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

Was anyone incredibly surprised with the big voice Sheridan produced in Little Shop?

I was kind of expecting it to be stunt casting and she'd be a good actress, but have to bluff her way through the songs - but she is pretty damn strong!

Still more a Paulette than an Elle though!

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

I think she'll do great! I mean, i can understand why people are expecting her to be laddy but she's a strong actress. I wonder if her voice will hold up to the challenge... but i have faith in her for this role. Any news on Emmett yet?

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

I adore Sheridan Smith! She is absolutely brilliant in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps. I would consider seeing the show again just for her.

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

I hate 'LB" ----BUT I would consider seeing her just ,simply, because she is an amazing actress.
A very close friend of mine auditioned and has been told to take whatever work comes, as this ('LB') isn't happening before next March!

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

I know this board tends to be pro Blond, but personally I agree with Baz in his colum today

'I know we all need cheering up because of the state of the economy and so on, but do we really need to have the musical of Legally Blonde opening in the West End in the autumn? Actress Sheridan Smith is a very clever performer, and I'm sure her leading men Duncan James (ex Blue) and Alex Gaumond are interesting, but unless there has been a total re-write, Legally Blonde is going to go down the plug hole. It was terrible on Broadway and our audiences deserve better - especially when I hear there's talk of tickets at £60 and over!'

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

Severe competition from "Love Never Dies" which will probably also include some very clever marketing and advertising, which aka probably won't be able to do for Legally Blonde! God knows what they will do with Sister Act...!

Sheridan Smith is a great actress but I don't know if she is right for the role... she isn't really "girly" enough. I think she'll play a little it with sarcasm more than ditz. Also with top price tickets hitting £60 or over, I think £62.50 on a sat, it's going to be a very hard sell to fill the theatre... which I believe is now possibly The Savoy.

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

I always associate the Savoy Theatre with classy and classic revivals, always thought Never Forget was an odd fit. Plus theres no real theatre frontage to help promotion

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

I must say, some of you guys are a little confusing!

"I think Sheridan Smith is a great actress, but I don't think she'll be able to play this role!".

I mean, which is it? Is she a great actress, in which case she probably *could* play the role, or is she completely unable to play the role, in which case she can't be that great an actress?

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

I think The Piccadilly is still a choice but I understand David Ian is not letting go as he hopes to put Flashdance is early 2010 if he can try and drum more Grease bookings.

To be fair neither theatre has great frontage to help promotion. The Piccadilly has more area to display and be creative but is not generally seen by passing trade. The Savoy has a very small space on The strand (none really at all on the theatre its self) but the space on The Strand by the Savoy is visable and gets good passing trade

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

Even the almighty Baz gave it the thumbs down today.
Not that that means anything but there you go, I agree with him.

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

Baz is an idiot though
The show received mainly positive reviews in NY and only had a shortened run because it played at the Palace, that place is a barn

Most weeks LB was playing to more people than most other Broadway shows even when it wasn't full.
If this had been in a smaller theatre it would have done better

Oh and im 50/50 with sheridan, i love her shes great but im not sure she could pull off this role

And PPS Flashdance has a theatre sorted for the end of the year

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

hmmm.. it had a good year on Broadway really all in all... but it was a quiet year and teen girls are more up for musicals on Broadway... hence still big Wicked mania still going on Broadway.

It may do good buisness... but when the target market are teen girls... £60 for a ticket is stupid, especially when many are going to have to have an adult taking them or something etc
#48

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

Baz wont have a clue what ticket prices are hes just randomly guessing

And im 30 and a guy and happen to love legally blonde, i think it has a wider appeal than most people think

re: Legally Blonde: hmmm...

The teen girls who see wicked and hairspray 27million times will no doubt manage blonde every night.

I'll go once, unless casting is super doubt I'd manage more as the songs I've heard kind of grate.
