Posted: 6/27/04 at 8:50pmI wish I could audition for musicals and plays, but I am too far away from New York to drive up there, audition and drive back whenever/if I get a call back. I said it once, I will say it again, THE SOUTH SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted: 6/27/04 at 8:54pmI was in the world premere of this 3 years ago. We did an amazing production. When you buy the rights to this show, you get a CD of my cast. People say that our CD rivals the Broadway version at some points.

Posted: 6/27/04 at 9:02pmIve seen it done by two high schools. One was San Antonios top performing arts school, and one was Texas's representation at the national thespian festival in nebraska. You think they would be able to handle it, but they cant. Both renditions were awful. One had a JVJ who couldn't sing, so he spoke-sang the songs. The other was just goofy. In both the only worth watching was eponine. I dont think its meant for high school.

Posted: 6/27/04 at 9:11pmThe school I saw it at was not even a performing arts school. They just have really really talented kids. They did Titanic blast year and blew me away. This year's Les Mis was better than any other production of the show I have seen. I guess it all just depends on the kids that are in the show.

Posted: 6/27/04 at 9:18pmI think whoever adapted the show did a very good job. They cut some stuff out, but you have to know the show really well to notice the differences. Basically they just cut out a verse here and there. Nothin big though. As I remember the well known songs like On My Own are the same as they were in the Broadway version

It really does depend on the talent of the cast. It varies. It is definetly not too much to take on if you've got the "right stuff".
As some of you know, I'm involved with a workshop program that Craig Schulman has put together for the LM Student productions. He has worked with some amazingly talented kids. The workshops and shows I've attended were unbelievably good. So don't sell all the productions as the same. Some are great some are not.
It's probably one of the most challanging yet rewarding shows to tackle and generates a lot of community support and excitment, which is a good thing too.

Posted: 6/27/04 at 10:00pmI didn't get to see it, but my alma mater performed it, and it was supposed to be really good. I think it's all about how good the vocal director is. He/she should be able to get the leads to sing it.

Posted: 6/27/04 at 10:55pmVery very true.. The musical director where I saw it was AMAZING!! he was offered a job up in NY last year, but turned it down. He really loves those kids!

Posted: 6/27/04 at 11:13pmI was in the world premiere with Scottie310 and it was an amazing experience. The cuts that they made weren't terribly detrimental to the show. Of course, theatre experts and BWW chatters qould notice missing tidbits but it flows very well to the average theatre-goer.

I agree--- I did the Louisiana Premiere (Mme. Thenardier) in Summer 2002 and the cuts really are nothing at all. It was by far one of the GREATEST theater experiences of my life-- I had an incredible cast and director to work with and it's where I met one of my best friends.
If any schools around you do it, go see it and hope to god they have a talented cast :)
Toodles!
