I have to agree with mustard on that. The only Fantine I've heard that didn't annoy the heck out of me was Ruthie Henshall on the 10th Anniversary Concert.
I think Kaho Shimada's performance is divine. She sounds so desperate, so sad. Um. That said, I don't know anyone else who agrees with me. But to me, she's perfect.
But does anyone else think that it's a bit much to credit people for characters with names too hard to pronounce let alone remember, who only have one or two lines? There must be forty different characters, and thirty might as well be called ensemble.
It's probably easier for the cast and crew to keep them straight when they DO have names. Sure, the audience may not know or care who Joly or Major Domo or Champmathieu or Prouvaire are, but it's certainly easier than remembering who gets Student 1 or Student 2 or Beggar 55's costumes. Ya know?
