Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens would be distracting, but at least we know they can sing. Let's face it. A studio will put a name in a musical film to attract people who normally wouldn't see that type of film. I would rather have a name who can sing than a name like Helena Bonham Carter who sings in a whisper. (And, of course, I would rather have an actor that can truly sing than Zac Efron or Vanessa Hudgens, but that's not realistic).

Actually a combo of Rowan Atkinson and Helena Bohnham Carter as the Thénardiers would be terrific.

They can't sing, though. Not without digital enhancement, anyway, and I would cringe if they synthesized Les Mis.
I think Efron can sing alright, though I doubt he has much range. As for Hudgens, there's never a moment where she doesn't sound digitized.
I could see Miley Cyrus doing a whiney approach to Eponine ala Frances De Ruffelle
Zac Efron can sing fine, but it's a pop voice - not a musical theatre voice, and we all know which one requires more talent. Plus, he probably wouldn't do it even if the studio would properly consider going down that road - which they wouldn't.
Les Mis does have an advantage over other musical to movies in that it has such a dramatic and cinematic back drop, perfect for screen. Plus, it would stand its own compared to the haul of recent movie musicals.
It is also capable of holding a pretty decently sized 'name' filled cast, without looking like Mamma Mia. Veteran actors mixed in with unknowns and rising stars.
I can picture Anne Hathaway in this, apart from the obvious reasons - she also has a very classic and tragic beauty to her.
At least they are still talking about it *rolls eyes*

What do you guys think about Evan Rachel Wood as Eponine? It would be a very different take on the character, but I'd love to see it. And at least we know she can sing.

That would be just...awful. I don't like Frances to begin with, but even her voice is less annoying than Miley. And then Eponine would just become even more of a teenybopper character.
Evan Rachel Wood would be much better, her voice is pretty but not especially strong though.

Ashley Tisdale has in fact been in Les Mis.

Apparently she is the Little Cosette in this clip (she appears twice during the clip): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvQRheZADu0
She was known as Ashley Marie Tisdale then, and her grandfather helped create a Cosette doll that was sold for BC/EFA.

Ashley Tisdale is proof IMO that a good singer as a kid doesn't necessarily turn out to be a good singer as an adult.
I think people are just tired of the assumption that if you're a Disney starlet you must be completely manufactured and relatively talentless. (I know I'm sick of this.)
I agree with the statement that just because you're Disney-fied doesn't mean you are talentless.
That said, I think any of those Efron-esque people would be horribly wrong for Les Mis. Totally wrong demographic and wrong message.
But Kate Winslet as Fantine! I LOVE that suggestion!

I forget who said it, but sadly, Les Miz is a pop show. Not a Musical Theatre show.

I don't think all Disney stars are talentless--it's hard to tell when their singing is always digitized.
p.s.- I have that doll

I'm completely in agreement with Kate Winslet for Fantine.
And the fact that not all Disney stars are completely talentless. They're not particularly great; but I don't think it's entirely fair to label them all as phony and lacking talent just because of the people who do come from Disney that definitely are. But if they cast certain starlets in this movie whenever it does come out, I'll probably prove myself to be totally hypocritical.
I'll be all over this movie when it eventually does come out because I still not-so-secretly obsess over the show.

husk_charmer, I think Les Mis can be both pop and traditional musical theater, depending on how large the orchestra is. Recently Les Mis has been highly synthesized, but it's still nowhere near as "pop" as Wicked or Legally Blonde.

On a different topic, I was surprised that the producer in talks with Schonberg was the producer of War of the Worlds and Mission Impossible. How does Les Mis fit into that resume? As long as they don't tap Christopher Columbus to direct, I'll be content.

For the record, I think Lucas Grabeel is by far the most talented Disney Channel 'star.' (Though I can't see him as any of the roles in Les Miserables...)

Oh, I forgot about him! He's very good, actually.
