I hope they don't feel the need to shorten it. Maybe it'll help that the Hobbit is coming out eleven days earlier and will likely be just under three hours long, if the Lord of the Rings trilogy is any indication.

But a musical is a different beast. If a scene is slow in a non-musical movie, they can cut to another scene. A musical can't cut in the middle of a song.
Not sure how reliable this source is, but an entertainment news writer posted via Twitter that the Les Mis movie will be running close to 3 hours and the studio has no plans of cutting it down.

LOL - it looks like you want the buzz about the running time repeated a second time
One film site has already reacted to the rumored running time and it looks like a very favorable response --

>>Honestly, this is a good thing, it needs to be a massive sweeping epic to really win everyone over and live up to the book and Broadway musical, and it sounds like Tom Hooper has delivered. Some of the replies to his tweet sum up the excitement fans should have, like this one: "After reading the impossibly good screenplay, this is the best news I could've hoped for." Indeed.<<<

So much for the 3 hour rumor - this tweeter is a Universal "pusher" which I think is a publicist.

Time for a little clarity. End credits aren't on yet but the running time of LES MISÉRABLES without them is 2:32.

So long as the "leaked" screenplay has basically been fittted in - I have no problem with that. Maybe now that that the orchestrations have been completed ( presumably) and with some editing here and there, that is probably what Tom Hooper has deemed best for the movie.
Maybe Universal was getting concerned calls from theater owners who saw the three-hour runtime rumors.
I think the screenplay will fit, with a few trims here and there. They won't cut songs but maybe some short bits. But if the orchestrations are almost done then they must have known the running time for a while now, since they'd settle on the edits before recording the music. So maybe the screenplay released last week reflects the final edit. We'll see!

I am not sure, but I think someone here said that a final edit will happen after the orchestrations have been put in. So, this could be the final result of all that.

Well, once you add the credits to that, the movie will be "close to 3 hours." Once you factor in all the trailers that come before it, moviegoers will be sitting in the theater over 3 hours per showing.

I don't think the credits will add that much time to it.
The funny thing is that many fans was guessing it'd clock in about 2:30. Then the three hour rumors started, and now a lot of people are angry and saying 2:32 isn't long enough.

But what is interesting is that the screenplay (which was lauded by most of those who read it for the quality of its content) was uploaded for purposes of providing backgrounders to the membership of various award bodies, for which the screenplay upload was solely intended. I would have to assume this will have to be the 2'32 hour-version because of its intended recipients. Not a three-hour version denied by Universal's spokesman!
^ True, but then again the Sweeney Todd screenplay with the Ballads intact and different cuts to the songs was what was posted to the Academy in 2007.

Yeah, like g. said, they screenplays that get uploaded don't necessarily represent the finished product.

In response t the question about Jo's response, I think she is saying the screenplay was uploaded on the Universal site under their "awards" area for the people who vote on screenplays for the various awards, so she thinks that version is the version that will be seen in the theater.

Thanks, Fan2 - that was exactly what I meant!
Maybe there might be some minor edits, but it cannot deviate too much ( not 30 minute cuts) from the screen version they will eventually see. There was no hurry to upload a screenplay ( if it was still going to be subjected to major edits) as the screenings are supposed to take place only around or after Thanksgiving.
This is Cameron's legacy. He will resist having it butchered with all his power.
I just hope there's an intermission!

Well that'll be popular with the elderly audience (like Dollypop)
There isn't going to be an intermission if it's only two and a half hours long. Titanic and all of the LotR movies were three hours and no intermissions there.
The last movie I saw with an intermission was 'Gettysburg', and that was four hours long (it was originally made as a TV movie). There was also an intermission when I saw the film version of 'Amadeus' in 1984, but it was a huge swanky restored theater. When I saw it again a few weeks later at a multiplex, there was no intermission, so I guess it was up to the theater owners.
