I wonder if it actually couldn't be a lot of fun - and I don't mean in the ultra camp parody vein in which you cast a man as Rhoda - I mean people are still pulling out WAIT UNTIL DARK and thats pretty absurd at this point.
How about Cynthia Nixon as Christine

Nice choice MB. How about Patricia Clarkson?
I'd prefer to see an actual girl as Rhoda.
Do you think Jackie Hoffman could nail the serious aspects of Hortense or would she just play it for shtick?
EDIT: Or Julie White or Carolee Carmello might be better choices.

I think Patricia Clarkson is divine but she's almost too old for Christine. I think you want someone who can play the sort of 1950s ideal Betty Crocker home maker. I would imagine Christine is probably only in her early 30s.
Yes a little girl as Rhoda. Jackie Hoffman is too schtick for Hortense.

Jan Maxwell would be perfect as Hortense!
You're right, Christine is younger now that I think of it.

Posted: 11/16/09 at 1:29pmIt's one of my favorite plays... grew up watching the 1956 film. I don't think it should ever be played for camp. The only "campy" thing about the original movie is the tacked-on scene after the end of the movie. The 1985 movie was God-awful. They may have kept the original ending, but nobody could act to save their lives. If they revive it, casting is essential to the play's success. You need people to play the roles believably without falling into melodrama.
