Lieutenant of Inishmore

McDonagh's Inishmore was incredible. Actually, I was not sure I would like this play given the subject matter. It deserved to win Best Play from the Lortel Awards and should win the 2006 Tony. We expected The History Boys to be the best but were disappointed. We left at intermission. It was indeed overhyped.

You should have stayed with The History Boys. The second act is by far the better. Unless you had very bad seats it is worth it alone to see such a great original ensemble.

Holly, I couldn't agree more. I saw the play this Saturday and was blown away (no pun intended). The frustrating part is that everyone at work was waiting for my review and whether they should see it. My answer to them is an absolute YES!!! The frustrating part is being unable to talk too much about it for fear of giving too much away. I even avoided a full scale review, for fear of spoiling someone elses experience. I will say this.... Quentin Tarantino would be proud.

I saw INISHMORE and it was fantastic, but nothing can top THE HISTORY BOYS this year, in terms of new plays.

Hey Holly, thanks for joining today to praise Lieutenant and bash History Boys. Nothing shillish about that.

This has been a great year for plays from across the pond. Would that this year's American plays had half the strength and style.

I just saw this last night and it was AWESOME!!! I won't say much but yes...you'd have expect to see Quentin Tarantino's name as director on the Playbill.

All I knew going into it was...if you're a cat-lover, be prepared. But really, it was awesome. On a thematic level, it's such a great commentary on so many things...the political unrest in Ireland itself (obviously), the much-ignored in the States situation with Ireland/England...and just on war itself. And it's absolutely hysterical. I haven't laughed that hard in a looooong time.

I HIGHLY recommend it, if you've got the stomach for it!

I think it is frustrating to see the Inishmore does not seem to be getting its just accolades. I so hope ticket sales will get better. How do you get the word out that this is a "must not miss" show. Actually, I was a bit shocked at how much I enjoyed the show. I thought Domhall Gleeson was just great. I hope that the word gets out about Inishmore.

Totally agree with you, Holly. Inishmore was excellent...I really enjoyed it. I hope it wins the Tony for best play.

If I were the type of person who leaves at intermission, I would have left after Act 1 of History Boys. It was a pretentious bore. (please don't yell at me)

Without a Trace,

Thanks for your response. I have never walked out of a show AND we paid $100 for the tickets to Boys. It just really dragged on and on. Another responder suggested we missed the best by not staying for the second act. Maybe so. I do not think so. I just hope Inishmore is seen by HUGE numbers of folks.

Ken, you should still go to Inishmore. I'm a cat lover as well, and had no problems. I'm also generally pretty squeamish and didn't have any issues with it, surprisingly!

I'm going back to Inishmore this weekend, and I can't wait. I loved both this and History Boys (which I'm sure I'll be making a repeat visit to sometime soon as well).

Edited: "A can lover"?!?!? Ugh!

In my opinion, best show of the season (I saw it off-broadway and I have been hailing it ever since). Everybody in the theatre was in tears from laughing.

P.S. Haven't seen History Boys...yet.

BTW - where are the rush seats for this show located?

When I went, I was in Orchestra L, way on the left side (but it wasn't obstructed or anything). I don't think there's necessarily a designated spot for them (just whatever's left on any given day??).

It was WONDERFUL - and ALL the actors were incredible - particulary Domnhall Gleeson (I think I am butchering a fellow Irish-man's name - sorry).

The prop masters deserve a Tony award!! They received an ovation as the audience was leaving the theater and they were cleaning up on stage.

The play does a great job of criticizing violence of ANY kind really, not just violence rooted in terrorism.

nice work... though there were a few lines I found offensive... nothing huge, but it certainly emphasized, for me, the playwright's socio-sexual point of view

Did you go on a weekend?
Thanks for the info!

Sounds like the same thing they did for THE PILLOWMAN rush. I wanna see it sometime soon. I love McDonough.

What time did you get there and all?

I went on a Wednesday a couple weeks ago (got the ticket in the afternoon). But, I believe they go on sale when the box office opens (not like how Pillowman sold them like 3 hours before the show, or something like that).

I went with my niece a few weeks ago (on a Sunday) and she got rush tickets in Row J, on the center aisle. I think it is pretty much whatever is left over.

Does it matter how close you sit? Is the stage raised?

I think I read somewhere that the stage is kind of high, so the first row or two might not be that great.

Good morning,

My husband and I sat in the second row - we loved our seats. We were very comfortable and were glad to have these seats. The only thing we could not see completely was the top of the kitchen table.
