I think we need some more investigation here; I have always operated under the assumption that unless the star is indicated on the ticket ("Elaine Strich as MEDEA"), there is no obligation to refund or exchange your ticket if someone is out. DRS is a good example; there are 3 names above the title. If you assume that each of them is entitled to 2 weeks vacation and that they'd want to stagger those absences, that means there are six weeks scheduled where one of the "Stars" will be out. Add to that sickness and emergencies, they'd be refunding an awful lot of tickets!

And while I can understand you wanting to see Schrieber's award winning performance, I'd say that show is more of an ensemble piece and he in no way "carries" the show that say, the way Madame Rose does in Gypsy.

And I LOVE that David Merrick story! I saw the tour of Cabaret ("Starring" Teri Hatcher) and she was out when I saw it. There was a board in the lobby and a slip of paper in the program, but I still heard people at intermission marveling at Teri Hatcher's performance!

Actually, there are 5 names above the title in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (John Lithgow, Norbert Leo Butz. Sherie Rene Scott, Joanna Gleason and Gregory Jbara) so it's 10 weeks of vacation. It IS possible though that refunds are only issued if it's an unscheduled absence though, as above the title people tend to have their vacation time publically announced.

Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

I've done the refund thing because a star was out.

From my experience, the only time the lobby sign will state the name of the actor out (rather than the character) is if it's a big star--I think they have to do this for some legal reason or something because in these situations a free refund is supposed to be available if desired.
