I'm confused about filming early next year though. The show is set around July 4th, but they're going to shoot Washington Heights when they're expecting snow?
Early next year could easily be May which is just four months into the new year. They are probably going to start shooting exteriors first (in studio) and then do the exteriors later. It's the movies...they have ways of working around these things.
Doesn't matter if they film in a studio....
I've been told that soundstage work begins shooting in Spring 2011 with exteriors being shot in late June 2011 in New York City.
As Lin clearly pointed out in the video they will probably cheat as far as interiors go (apartments, inside the bodega, inside the salon, car dispatch, the club, etc.). The actual block "setting" and all the exteriors (outside of apartment buildings, store fronts, etc.) will be filmed in Washington Heights.

There you go! Most movies usually start with soundstage work and then do exteriors later, this makes the most sense for IN THE HEIGHTS as it does take place over the summer.
CarlosAlberto, so you know the difference...
Exterior: outside
Interior: inside
I already caught that and corrected it. Multi-tasking...I tell ya.
I'd imagine they'd have to round out a cast pretty soon. They'll probably need at least 3 months of rehearsals/recording.
Not necessarily. They can cast as late as early January 2011. Only dance heavy movie musicals have an extensive rehearsal/prep period.
Aside from the salsa club sequence, IN THE HEIGHTS does not feature any of the principal cast dancing. I'm quite sure the ensemble dance elements of the stage version won't be included for the film adapation as certain dance styles do not translate well on film... only on stage. Having the 'street atmosphere' dancing around works great on stage -- on film? Um, no.
Any casting news?
BrodyFosse123, I just assumed that since Kenny was also choreographing the film, that there would still be a large dane element to the film. I could be wrong, though. :]
"Any casting news?"
Tons, even though they haven't begun casting yet and you, presumably, just watched a video with Lin saying they have no cast in place.

Here's to hoping Sofia Vergara gets Daniela.
Sofia Vergara IS Daniela. Period.
I doubt that they will have the same type of choreography in the film. I don't see that lending itself to film a bunch of Washington Heights residence hoping, skipping and leaping down an inner city block starting off their day as they buy their morning coffee and paper from Usnavi - it would get laughed right off the screen. What works on stage doesn't necessarily translate into film. It will be interesting how they will tackle that opening number.

Remember how "Tradition" was staged in the movie of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF? Instead of villagers dancing in a circle, it was a montage showing them going through their daily routine.
