re: Linda Eder singing Babs' Title

I was looking down the thread, thinking, "Where is BoxOfficeJon? It's a Linda Eder thread!" But there he is, the cutie. You may not know this, but he loves Linda Eder! re: Linda Eder singing Babs' Title

I like both Streisand's and Eder's versions, but no one, and I mean no one, beats Lillias White's rendition she did at the Funny Girl Actor's Fund concert a few years ago.

re: Linda Eder singing Barbra's Title

There is just no comparison, for me at least, and it's Barbra all the way. I've also seen her sing it live and she blew me away- and the lady was almost 60 then!

Linda Eder has a nice voice but I feel zero emotion & connection when she sings. When Barbra sings, it can make me cry.I suspect it is because, as others have stated (Bwaysinger said it best), she herself does not really connect with the material.

* Edited to add: If anything, Carolee Carmello's version is much superior than Linda Eder's. I've never heard a version to even rival Barbra's til I heard her! It is to die for.

re: Linda Eder singing Barbra's Title

I agree! You cannot even compare Ms. Eder's rendition with that of Barbra's. Sure, Ms. Eder does a superb job but I still long to hear Barbra sing it. It is just identified with her. Like when someone sings "People" all I can hear is Barbra singing it. Ms. Eder colours her notes beautifully and she knows how to show emotion in her voice unfortunately that is the only place she shows it in. Watching her on stage is painful. You have this beautiful sound coming out of a body that shows no expression whatsoever, except when she hits the big notes and her head rolls to the right while she closes her eyes. She was the best thing in 'Jekyl And Hyde' but I loved how every time she sang a song she AHD to sit down and all the scenery left the stage so it could turn into a mini Linda Eder concert.

Love her versions of both songs and have been lucky in that I have seen her do both live. Twice.

You guys should really listen to 'Vienna'. I know that's not what this thread is about but the beauty of her voice is undeniable.

I love both versions of DROMP. They are really different. I think Babs has (had?) a phenomenal voice so to be compared to her is a compliment.

re: Linda Eder singing Barbra's Title

No one can deny that Linda has glorious pipes. I stand behind my earlier post in this thread that I enjoy her version of DROMP much more than Babs. VIENNA always brings tears to my eyes, as well as many of her other recordings. She is also one of very few artists whose voice comes across much more pure & powerful live. If you have never seen her in concert........GO!

However, I do have to agree with some earlier comments regarding her acting skills & song interpretation. Earlier in her career (including Jekyll & Hyde) this simply was not her forte. But if you have seen her recent concerts, or her brilliant performance in Camille Claudel, she seems to have been really working on improving her acting, and is now very capable of 'selling' a song and becoming a character. She also has been getting more comfortable in front of an audience.

I think she could be just as big as Babs....... if she wanted to be.

I love me some Lunda, but I'm personally a bigger fan of Stephanie J. Block's Parade.

re: Linda Eder singing Barbra's Title

You're going to have people who hate when someone sings a song that is associated with someone else. I can't stand when ANYONE sings "Over the Rainbow," no matter how well they sing it. However, I do enjoy Linda's version better, for some technical reasons. I'm surprised no one has mentioned the modulations she added to the song, or the differences in breathing and all that sort of thing. I think Linda does more with it that impresses me. And about her "emotional" connection and all that...has anyone seen her sing "Gold" lately? Watch that and tell me she doesn't connect.

I love Linda! I was first introduced to her when I first bought JAH, and I came across the song, "Bring on the Men"...I was like "who the hell is this"? I then bought many of her solo cds, as well as her in "Pimpernal" and I truly love her! She has an amazing voice, and her DROMP is one of my favorites sung by her.
