Lion King Closing?

Posted: 1/22/05 at 4:28amI'm surprised no one brought up the fact that Disney is only into making money. They will drag any show on forever if it's still making money. Look at Aida. They sucked all the money they could out of that show. The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and Tarzan will all be around for a very long time. At least if the new ones don't turn out like that horrendous Disney revue that's touring the country.

So, Lion King will be with us for many years to come. As far as closing or moving to make room for Mary Poppins, that won't happen either. Poppins will have another Broadway home.

Disney..only into making money?
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!
Aren't they a non profit organization dedicated to promoting and creating exciting experimental theater?
I think you're confused with another organization.

No, I think people will grow tired of LION KING. And I don't have any faith in TARZAN at all.
Yes, Disney is into making money. In these times - that's ALL they are into. However, I don't think LION KING could have a solid 20 year run. It'll get to 12 years.

The plot of the Lion King can hardly be considered dumb.
It is based on Shakespeare's "Hamlet," one of the most profound works of the english language and both the film and the musical sufficiently carry out the themes and ideas presented in the play.
After hearing this I was amazed I had never realized it as it is painfully obvious.

Posted: 1/22/05 at 2:52pmThis thread gave me hope for broadway...oh well. too bad. itll sstay open for years. You know, Lion King is the only musical i can think of that actually has its climax at the very beginning (the chircle of life song) and then moves consistently downhill from there. The show never reaches that excitement level again.

Posted: 1/22/05 at 4:30pmTHE LION KING is nothing more than a re-hash of Shakespeare's HAMLET. However, the staging is brilliant, and that alone makes it worth seeing and enjoying.

Somebody please explain to me how rehashing Hamlet is a bad plot move. Please.
That being said, I very much doubt The Lion King will be closing anytime soon, especially given the popularity of the tour.

Oh wow.
First Rent is closing.
Then Wicked.
And now Lion King.
Guess we'll just have Jackie Mason shows running.
