I have a hunch Legally Blonde might take it. A letter backstage from Neil Simon read, "The writing, the dancing, all performances and staging were the very best, and with the Tony Awards coming up soon, you certainly have my vote." Other than that, it definitely appeals to the masses.
Does anyone else find it ironic that it might be the girl in pink that eventually dethrones the green girl from her #1 spot atop broadway's grosses?

I wonder why so few people think that Mary Poppins has a chance at a best musical nomination. I'm no fan of the show, but it's the biggest hit of the season (money-wise, at least) and it actually received pretty good reviews, better, as I remember, than Curtains, who a lot of people think has a lock on a best musical nod.

Exactly leefowler! I think the musicals with the best chances are:
1. Grey Gardens
2. Mary Poppins
3. Spring Awakening
4. Legally Blonde
I'll laugh if it ends up being the unlikely's:
1. Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me (Winner)
2. The Times They Are A-Changin'
3. Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
4. High Fidelity

I would love for GG and Company to win!

You've got to be kidding me.

Please not Spring Awakening. I can't stand the music!
Everyone should be happy that there's a show that could have won in any number of lean years that won't even get a nomination this season. That's a pretty good case for how strong this season has become.
I am pretty sure Spring Awakening will be a shoe in for most of the awards this season. I think they will win best musical, score, and direction for sure. (and note: I am not one of the OBSESSED SA fans)
revival wise...i think its going to go to apple tree.
best actress: ebersole. no doubt there.
actor....i'm stuck on this one.
Apple Tree for Best Revival? Are you kidding?
The only two locks are GREY GARDENS and SPRING AWAKENING.
I honestly don't believe that CURTAINS is a lock for a best musical nomination. If both BLONDE and MUSIK get raves, I think they could both bump CURTAINS out of the mix.
CURTAINS will surely get nods for a couple performances, the score, and some design elements, but it's far from a lock for best musical.
I do believe that POPPINS has the potential to sneak in and snag a nomination, but a hunch is telling me that the nominations will end up being:
GREY GARDENS
LEGALLY BLONDE
LOVEMUSIK
SPRING AWAKENING
Munk, if Blonde and Poppins aren't nominated, do you think Curtains will win, or is the race wide open?
Revival will either be 110 in the Shade, depending on reviews, or Company, IMO.
I think the musical nominees will be (my final list):
Legally Blonde
Grey Gardens
Spring Awakening
Curtains
Winner-either Curtains or Legally Blonde (sadly)
Best Actress: CHRISTINE EBERSOLE
Best Actor: David Hyde-Pierce or Raul Esparza (Tend to think Raul)
Best Featured Actress: Mary Louise Wilson
Best Featured Actor: Jonathan Gallagher (possible upset here)
Best Director: Michael Mayer
Best Score: SA (although I hate to admit it-I'd love GG to sneak this one out)
Best Book: GG-Doug Wright will win
There are my predictions
I don't think that CURTAINS will, can, or should beat SPRING AWAKENING, LEGALLY BLONDE, or GREY GARDENS.
A CHORUS LINE will take revival.
Ebersole will take actress.
Hyde Pierce will take actor.
Wilson for supporting actress, and who the hell knows for supporting actor.
If you ask me, i can't think of a single male supporting performer that deserves a Tony.
I know, but if Blonde isn't nominated (it will most likely win if nominated) what do you think could win?

I think Matt Cavenaugh is very deserving of one, although I'm sure he'll end up not even getting nominated.
I really, really want Grey Gardens to win Best Musical. I truly feel it is the best musical this year.
Um...he barely deserves a nomination, let alone a win.

Well, that's my opinion. You don't have to agree.
I agree with Munk's list of musical nominations. I don't think Curtains deserves it at all. But Munk, let me ask you this. For supporting males, do you not think that Jason Danieley deserves a nomination? He is the ONLY person in this category I can see walking away with the Tony this year, with Gallagher as a distant 2nd place.

THANK YOU.
Despite what everyone keeps saying, the reviews didn't see to be ALL that bad from what I read, and the show has been a big hit--why do people consider it out of the race?
Because, it is a big hit financially, but not critically. The reviews were lukewarm at best.

Munk- Did you see Legally Blonde? If you did, do you think it should win Best Musical?
