re: Dorian Gray...
I saw a large-scale musicalization of it in Los Angeles called "Dorian." It had big cast: Robert Cuccioli, Josie de Guzman and Armelia McQueen were all in it playing roles. Some parts of it worked really well, and others didn't.
After seeing it, I definitely think Dorian Gray could be a musical (although, maybe not the one I saw).

Posted: 8/7/05 at 1:32pmGone With the Wind has already been done. Found some success in Japan and London, but the pre-Broadway tour collapsed on the road in 1974.

Posted: 8/7/05 at 1:53pmThere's a Tom Jones operetta from the early 20th century, as well as a recent musical adaptation that was staged, I think last year at North Shore Music Theatre.

Posted: 8/7/05 at 4:04pmI second Pride and Prejudice! And maybe Wuthering Heights.

Posted: 8/7/05 at 4:19pmWuthering Heights definately.... but how about A Confederacy of Dunces? That could work...

Wuthering Heights has been done as a Broadway play at the Longacre in 1939 and as a musical in a couple of small, unsuccessful incarnations.
A Confederacy of Dunces could be done. The nature of the novel is so many little stories and characters, though, that I think it's tricky. I know there have been attempts at small productions in the New Orleans area numerous times. Repeated ventures into a film version have stalled after attempts at getting a script less than 10 hours long have failed, over and over again. Still, I think Ignatius is a character that just cries out to be musicalized. Perhaps Dan Fogler could do him justice, and "with this hair, and in this body." He'd just the mustache and hat. Yazbek might be a good choice to write the score.

Good catch, HumanTorch. I think I mixed in a little of his character's name when I was typing it (it's fixed now), but I do think he would be a good match -- he's the right body type, right age, and right comic style for Ignatius.
We should start a thread with a dream cast for the rest of the characters! Myrna (?) for example....but I digress.

Posted: 8/7/05 at 7:30pmCold Sassy Tree. It was already done as an opera, so a musical adaptation is not that far-fetched.

Definitely "Wuthering Heights". I'd also like to see "The Great Gatsby" as a musical.

Posted: 8/7/05 at 11:42pmI would enjoy seeing Pride and Prejudice the musical, but only if they do it right. I wouldn't want this classic to be turned into another Little Women... not that Little Women (the musical) was that bad. I would just hope that it wouldn't follow the same path.

Posted: 8/8/05 at 1:09ami would personally like to see some Poirot done, or another form of Agatha Christie. However, I also agree Count of Monte Christo could be really good as well as Sherlock Holmes, and maybe some Ayn Rand because she has such awesome characters.

Holdmetouchme - Zhivago was being worked on as a page to stage musical at La Jolla last I heard, w/Lucy Simon doing the music, which made me happy.
I would laugh so hard if anyone tried to musicalize Faulkner or Flatlanders.

Faulkner. LOL.
I can just imagine the child singing the "Fish" song from As I Lay Dying.
