Another vote for Michael Jeter in Grand Hotel. Watch his performance on that Tony Award show and listen to his acceptance speech and you can't help getting a lump in your throat.

Opening Number: (no grade - just missed it)
Billy Elliot: C (disappointing - gave me no interest to see BE)
Guy and Dolls: D (how can you blow Sit Down is beyond me)
Hair: A- (finally gave some life in the Tony show)
Legally Blond: C- (dumb)
Mamma Mia: C- (dumber)
Jersey Boys: C- (dumbest)
Next to Normal: A-(making plans now to see)
Rock of Ages: B+ (and I hate music of this era)
Shrek: B (fun choice)
West Side Story: B (safe

What part of "live" theater don't you get?
Lip-synching for any reason is a sham and plain wrong (I want to hear an actual performance, not a perfect one - for that I can listen to the OBC).
Several years ago a local theater wanted to use synthesized music to save costs - I and mnay other supporters told them that our subscriptions and donations would be cancelled if they went ahead with their plan - the result, live music only.

Judge Turpin's self flagelation scene in Sweeney Todd (now often cut out or restaged).
I also agree about that one King & I moment. You can hear it in their voices.

A few weeks ago I heard Terrence McNally interviewed by Seth Rudetsky.
He told a story about asking composers for audition songs for Ragtime.
The Ahrens and Flaherty tape included "Wheels of a Dream". When the show opened, an article in the New York Times claimed that Ford Motors required the inclusion of a song about the Ford Model T in the show since they were using the Ford Center for the Performing Arts. McNally wrote to the Times and said they were wrong since he had the

Although I consider Ragtime in the top 5 musicals of all time and it has not received the recognition it is due, I hardly consider it a flop.

I thought about this overnight and logged on today to mention Michael Jeter's acceptance speech. I was pleased to see that others felt the same way. (let's face it, you don't really think all that much about acceptance speeches)
Jeter's speech was honest and emotional (and yes I got teary eyed when I just listened to it again).
Great talent (check out his performance in "Welcome to Collinwood"). His performance at the Tony Awards that year in "We'll Take a Glass Together" is
