Just thought i would fill you lovely people in on the Evita news as ive seen its been spoke about a lot on here.
After talking to a few people involved in the the London Revival of Evita the other night they have said that they are no plans to take the show on to New York as it did not perform as well as people had hoped here in the UK.
They did originally hope to transfer the show but its no longer an option.
Bill Kenwright here in the UK now has permission to tour the show around the uk (the tour is planned for next year and if he has anything to do with it it will probably suck).Parts of the west end set will be used for the UK tour but it will be scaled down slightly.
Evita the tour is looking at Manchester and Birmingham as the first stops on the UK tour.
Just wanted to let you all know x

Posted: 5/11/07 at 10:57pmCan't say I'm suprised, but I'm definately disappointed. I have yet to see a professional production of Evita, and was really looking forward to this. Hopefully it will be revived again sometime in the future.

Posted: 5/11/07 at 11:31pmI suspect that Porgy and Bess will not transfer either, and for the same reason.

Posted: 5/11/07 at 11:34pmIt got pretty positive reviews last year, but when I went to see the show, the house was half empty. It's a real shame, it should not have closed so early. It's a gorgeous production, with great orchestrations, and a real star in Elena Roger. The only thing I didn't care for was the choreography.

Posted: 5/12/07 at 12:19amYeah, it is kind of suprising it didn't do so well. It was a big hit back in the day, and when i saw the tour last year the theater - about 2,000+ - was almost packed. Maybe the only solution is to put Menzel as Evita.

Posted: 5/12/07 at 12:20amI still think that American audiences would have embraced EVITA more.

Maybe the only solution is to put Menzel as Evita.
And maybe the only solution to that would be to kill myself.
Part of me is happy that this isn't transferring, and I don't know why.

Posted: 5/12/07 at 12:31amI'm highly disappointed. It looked gorgeous in pictures and from what I've heard on cd, would have been great to have back. I think in a few years we should hopefully get it, I remain optimistic.

Posted: 5/12/07 at 12:33amThe production did look gorgeous, and I agree Munk, I think Americans would have supported the revival more. And the Menzel thing was just a joke, although I really do think she could sing the role, not sure how good it would sound, but she's got the notes in her voice.

Posted: 5/12/07 at 12:46amI agree that Menzel could do some of those, but God stand back when she has to banshee out "he supports you for he loves you, understands you, IS ONE OF you."

I was thinking the exact same thing, my ears would be ringing for days.

Posted: 5/12/07 at 12:51amI'm actually listening to New Argentina now trying to imagine what some of her vocals may have sounded like had she done Evita here. I actually got a chill down my back thinking of some of the notes, but I just don't even think she has that quality to make an Eva. Her look, voice, it just doesn't seem suited to this role at all and I don't know why some here last year seemed so taken with the idea of her filling it.

And she really isn't much of an actress, which Eva needs to be.
My stomach turns just thinking about Menzel as Evita.

If your stomach turns thinking of Menzel as Eva, I'd hate to imagine your reaction to that Patti woman on the OBC! Julie Covington all the way

I don't know why some here last year seemed so taken with the idea of her filling it.
From a UK perspective, I think it was because some people had heard she was coming to the UK to do an iconic female role, and most people knew they were looking for an Eva, so 2 and 2 were put together to create a great big scary 5. Then Menzel did 'Wicked' and Roger did 'Evita', so things settled down again. ^_^

Posted: 5/12/07 at 6:22amI see it was announced the Elena Roger is going into "Boeing Boeing", the French farce which has become a substantial hit in the West End this season. I haven't seen it but I'm told it's VERY funny. Now there's a new reason to go.

I honestly believe Evita didn't fair to well simply because the West End hasn't been fairing to well the past year.
The big shows such as Wicked and Spamalot seemed to over shadow shows like Evita and Porgy and Bess so i dont think they stood a chance.
It was also not a highly praised production like many Americans seem to think, i remember it getting a lot of Luke warm reviews when it opened with just the lovely lead getting praise.
I also think Evita got over shadowed a lot by the sound of music.
Also no one here was really asking for a revival of Evita and no one really seemed to care that much.
I watched Evita many years ago and LOVED it and then watched the revival and left feeling cold.It just didn't seem to have the energy and impact this time round.
I think Evita will fare well on tour(unfortunately kenwright will kill that).

Posted: 5/12/07 at 10:29amI saw the original cast in Evita and loved it, but I have to admit that with a subpar cast it can be a terrible bore.

Posted: 5/12/07 at 10:46amRoger really was the only thing great about this revival. The production itself was too literal and too politically washed out.
