"The much-buzzed-about London revival of GUYS AND DOLLS, starring Ewan McGregor and Jane Krakowski, has recouped its $5.24 million investment in a speedy 17 weeks, Variety reported.
The staging has been a huge box-office success, no doubt partly due to the presence of its stars. The show opened June 1 at the Piccadilly. Michael Grandage directs.
GUYS AND DOLLS is produced by Howard Panter for Ambassador Theatre Group and David Ian for Clear Channel Entertainment. Another producer is American Arielle Tepper. According to the Variety article, the backers plan to open the show on Broadway in fall of 2006."
WOW...they would need big names to sell this.

First Sweeney and now Dolls?
It's a Donmar Warehouse "invasion!"

Posted: 10/13/05 at 7:45pmthat's exciting news. it was 5.24 million POUNDS though, right? 5 million dollars for a Broadway musical seems kinda cheep... but yeah, exciting news. but, it will make it the fifth production of GUYS AND DOLLS to make it to Broadway and SOUTH PACIFIC still hasn't even been revived once! grrrrrrr....

I wonder how well this would fair now? The last revival ended only ten years ago.
It would need names to sell it and I doubt Ewan has time to do it on Broadway. I could see Krakowski signing on, however.

Posted: 10/13/05 at 8:03pmWould love to see Krakowski on Broadway again! I would love to see Ewan too, but I agree that I bet he already has other commitments.

This is an overall satisfying production, except for the mediocre Ewan Mcgregor. 'Sit Down, You're Rockin' The Boat' had some of the finest choreography i've seen in recent memory.

Posted: 10/13/05 at 8:49pmJeez, the '92 revival made a huge impression here, and really touched off the general revival craze that is still with us. Seems too soon for me.

5.24 million pounds is about $10 million dollars- not hugely expensive, but definitely not cheap. Anyway, I can't stand this show, so I'm indifferent at best to the news.
As far as I know, we haven't a revival of- oh, I don't know- A Little Night Music either. Which is really weird, when you think about it. Not only is it Sondheim; it was a financial success in its time, and is definitely one of his sweetest shows.

Posted: 10/13/05 at 9:15pmThey announced a revival of Night Music with Glenn Close for 2006 awhile ago, Plum, but I haven't heard anything about it in ages.

Posted: 10/13/05 at 9:17pmI also wonder what happened to the Glenn Close A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC...Wasn't Trevor Nunn directing it?

Posted: 10/13/05 at 9:20pmHmm, it seems like the revival was too recent. It's got the history though! I love the show, I'd see it if it transfers.

Ahh Jane was so good as Adelaide...it would be great to have her back on Broadway. Ewan does have other plans though..I do doubt he'd do it. I wonder who would be Skye then...
It would be great if Douglas Hodge signed on too....he was brilliant as Nathan Detroit.
But..can anyone else see Sutton Foster as Adelaide? I just always thought she could do that part really well...

Posted: 10/13/05 at 9:27pmDoes this show need to be revived every 5 minutes ? Enough is enough . Revive High Spirits or Lil Abner or anything else. Give G & D a rest

"Jeez, the '92 revival made a huge impression here, and really touched off the general revival craze that is still with us."
No it didn't.
re: London GUYS AND DOLLS Possibly Broadway Bound#17
Posted: 10/13/05 at 9:29pmI would NOT mind a Lil Abner revival at all......

Wasn't seeing McGregor onstage the main selling point of this production? Who on earth will they get to replace him? I mean, Jane Krakowski's great, but she can't carry a show box office-wise.
Namo, can you elaborate? I really don't know much about this topic.

Posted: 10/13/05 at 10:07pmTrue that musical revivals were coming more into the fray prior to Guys & Dolls, but it was the box office success of Guys & Dolls in '92 that was responsible for the "revive any title from the Golden Age" mania that led to the parade of such financially unsuccessful (and artistically variable) 90s-00s musical revivals as How to Succeed in Business, Damn Yankees, Show Boat, Once Upon a Mattress, She Loves Me, The Sound of Music, 1776, Bells are Ringing, On the Town, Flower Drum Song, Wonderful Town, et al.

Posted: 10/13/05 at 11:31pmI thought Jane Krakowski and Douglas Hodge were the highlights of this show. Ewan was fun to see but his performance was weak in comparison to the others. It was a great production of G&D and I think it would do well on Broadway. I truly hope that Jane, and especially, Douglas will be considered for the NY run.

Posted: 10/13/05 at 11:49pmThe actors who play Nathan and Adelaide have to carry this show. Sky and Sarah may have the billing and the goopy love songs, but they are far less interesting dramatically, and they tend to slip out of the memory. That was why Nathan Lane became a bigger star after the '92 revival and Peter Gallagher didn't.

Surely they realize that the show recouped so quickly because of McGregor's presence? Without him, I can't imagine there is much demand for another Broadway production of this right now, unless they can line up Matt Damon or Hugh Jackman...
Oh and Best12, SWEENEY didn't play the Donmar. It's from the Watermill...

Posted: 10/14/05 at 1:19amQuestion, not to threadjack, but if Sweeny was so good, why did it not last very long? Is it just a hard sell? If the show did come to Broadway, it would def. need a great cast to sell tickets. This show is seen all over the country because of high school and regional productions, that I think most audiences would pass on it for something of more spetical.

Posted: 10/14/05 at 2:32amRe: Nathan Lane being a bigger star than Peter Gallagher, I don't think that Peter Gallagher's career is exactly chopped liver... since the 1992 revival, he *has* been doing projects like "The Player" (dir. by Robert Altman), "The Hudsucker Proxy" (dir. by the Coen brothers), "American Beauty" (dir. by Sam Mendes) and "The O.C." (created by Josh Schwartz). Just because he hasn't been on Broadway much since then doesn't mean he's dropped off the face of the earth.
