Hello! I am headed back to New York for a theatre weekend Sept 19 - 22. The goal is 5 shows in 3 days (back in January I saw 10 shows in 6 days). I know that I want to see Pippin and Kinky Boots, and likely Big Fish. But I am looking for some Off-Broadway shows to round that out.

I am thinking about Unbroken Circle (mostly because I feel I know the most about it - I listen to SirisXM On Broadway about 4 hours a day).

I like both musicals and straight plays, comedy and drama. (sorry not much help). I love fantastical worlds, and plays that open your mind to new ways of thinking. I like good theatre more than flash and trickery.

I am interested in all opinions and appreciate any help!
Thank you!

I would try and catch THE TWO-CHARACTER PLAY if you can. It's fantastic and, from what I understand, rarely performed.

I'm also pretty excited about the Pearl's YOU NEVER CAN TELL. I saw the play in Chicago and it's quite fun, and as far as I'm concerned the Pearl is the best revival theater in New York.

That would be BUYER & CELLAR, singular (each). And it is an excellent choice for great acting and writing. Maybe even a fantastical world, if Urie works his magic on you in creating the world of Streisand's basement mall the way he worked for me.

Also, based on your criteria, I'd want to make sure you've seen PETER & THE STARCATCHER by now.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

Another rousing vote for Peter and the Starcatcher! It was magnificent on Broadway, and the transfer off-broadway is identically wonderful. The cast I saw in April was entirely the equal of the original cast. Nothing in the last two years has made me laugh and cry so much in one evening.

Of course, nothing off-broadway creates a more fantastical world than SLEEP NO MORE. I haven't been back in the last year or more but trust its the same trippy night it's always been.

Yes, Tree2, Sleep No More is perfect. With its midnight shows one can squeeze a 6th show into that three day weekend.

Buyer and Cellar, Peter and the Starcatcher, and Where We're Born at the Rattlestick Playwrights Theater. All brilliant.

Thank you all so much!
In January I saw Peter and the Starcatcher before it left Broadway (it was magnificent!!) and I did make Saturday a 3 show day with a midnight showing of Sleep No More. I really did enjoy it and and trying to see if I can convince the friend I am staying with to go before I get tickets. I want to experience it another time.

I will look into Buyer & Celler, and Two Character Play. Thanks - this is exactly what I was looking for - suggestions so that I can narrow my search. I like to do research about shows I plan to see (self-identified control freak) :) but was a bit overwhelmed by number of options.

Are there any more shows I should look into?

Whatever you do don't see UNBROKEN CIRCLE! It is a waste of time and money.

I would throw my support toward TWO-CHARACTER PLAY. People who have seen THE OLD FRIENDS love it but it's probably sold out already for those dates you're coming.

ETA: Your visit also corresponds with 20at20 so feel free to see those shows at a discount. http://www.20at20.com

I would recommend Horton Foote's The Old Friends. It's excellent theatre, with a top-flight cast doing terrific work.

I'm going to see The Old Friends this weekend so I'll chime in with a review of that after I see it.

I did like Unbroken Circle-it's well worth seeing. (The playwright is in the show as the father and his real-life daughter plays his character's daughter in it, which is really neat.)

I think Peter and the Starcatcher, if you haven't seen it, is well worth a visit as well.

Mr. Burns at Playwrights Horizons is fantastic. Incredibly interesting work in a really fantastical world. Highly recommended.
