I heard that it was originally written by Jonathan and friends for Ali, a friend who died of AIDS (we hear her name in Life Support on the Cast Album for a reason). I think Jonathan did the music, and each of the friends contributed some lyrics. That's what I *heard*. I don't know if it's true.
At first, I really didn't like it. AT all. For some reason, though, this week I've had the insane urge to listen to it and have grown to really like it a lot. It is a beautiful song (gotta say, some of the metaphors seem a little... random, but whatever), and the cast does an AMAZING job with it. They all sound fantastic.
In all honesty, though, Rent itself is pretty sentimental (not that I don't adore it! But it is!), and I would've really rather them had a credits song with more attitude to balance that out. (Personally, I was rooting really hard for Boho Days and I still think that would've been great, but I think this was a good second-place decision.)
