Love Likley to Die...

Well its a huge shame as it's one of Webber's best scores since Sunset, but Love Never Dies looks set to die...

Unofficially Jack O'Brien and Jerry Mitchell (why they ever did the show I'll never know... there history and thinking is all wrong for this show... Webber should never have gone here) have now left the production. I heard rumours over the past month that they were squabbling with Webber and now that is leaking into the press. Additionaly Webber has annoyed the set designer of the show reportedly too after Webber being unimpressed with new designs for the show.

Hal has turned down coming onboard and a few others directors have been contacted to "fix" the show - but it seems they are all having trouble getting over the wobbly plot and current staging without really starting again.

The Nederlanders are closing in on Webber too - they are very annoyed. They have held the Neil Simon now for year forbidding any shows going in contracts of over 6 months to prevent long runs so Love Never Dies can come in - but now have too many shows waiting in the wings to turn them away, especially as the show is no where near Broadway ready now. It looks likley Catch Me If You Can will open Spring 2011 with Evita (not Webber produced) wanting the theatre also for 2012.
Additionally the Nederlanders are having doubts about the show continuing in London (they own half of the Adelphi) and the show is struggling to break even they are wanting to hold talks on the shows future. It is still on the cards for LND to shutter for a few weeks in October - but this could be all too late and just adding to the loses. Nederlander is very keen to take Addams Family to London at The Adelpi Jesus Christ Superstar, he loves having his shows at this venue.

Its such a terrible shame that Londons only brand new musical hasn't taken off. Personally I blame Webbers appauling producing habits and inconsitentcys mixed in with a truly awful lack of marketing and really poor designs. the show just looks like a bad early 90's gothic low budget film.

At least the music will live on and I think in another 10 or 15 years a talented producer will unlock this musical properly as I think a great story is there to be told and with this sweeping and fantastic music - it should be a hit, but sadly the staging and producing of this has just been all wrong.

The show will be lucky I think to last to its 1st anniversary show in London and then die, never making any other productions.

Love Likley to Die...

From the New York Post.

At the opening-night party in London for Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Love Never Dies," the gossip was that Lloyd Webber was going to ask his old friend Hal Prince to help revamp the show before it headed to New York.
The chatter made sense since "Love Never Dies" is the sequel to "The Phantom of the Opera," which Prince directed, brilliantly, and which is now in its 22nd year on Broadway. (Last week's gross: $825,000, thank you very much.)
But back in March, when I ran the gossip past Andre Ptaszynski, who runs Lloyd Webber's theater empire, he laughed and said: "The mention of Hal Prince is a stunner to Andrew and me. No such thing was anywhere on the radar."

Well -- ping, ping, ping -- something's on my radar.
Prince was in London last month directing a new show, "Paradise Found," at the Menier Chocolate Factory. He took time out to see "Love Never Dies." Lloyd Webber took him to lunch and, sure enough, asked him to come on board, production sources say.
The prospect was enticing, largely because Lloyd Webber is prepared to spend vast amounts of money to fix "Love Never Dies."
"Most producers say, 'No! You can't do that -- it costs too much,' " says a source. "Andrew says, 'Let's hire more acrobats!' "
But after mulling it over a few days, Prince, I'm told, declined. He's going to concentrate on fixing "Paradise Found," which took a drubbing from the critics and has its own problems.
This leaves Lloyd Webber in a tricky spot because the director of "Love Never Dies," Jack O'Brien, has had it with the show, sources say. So has the choreographer, Jerry Mitchell.
"Jack and Jerry are sick of it," says a source. "They've been going back and forth to London working on it, but nothing seems to please Andrew. They're fed up. The problem is the book, and they didn't write the book.

O'Brien and Mitchell have moved on to their next show, "Catch Me If You Can," which is due on Broadway in the spring. Ironically, it may end up at the Neil Simon Theatre, which was being held for "Love Never Dies" before its "indefinite" postponement.
Lloyd Webber continues to hunt for a new director. Rob Marshall, who won an Oscar nod for the movie "Chicago," is in the mix.
After his disastrous movie version of "Nine," Marshall could use a comeback, and an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical is a good place to stage one.
"Love Never Dies" needs a lot of work. The plot's a muddle, the pacing is agonizingly slow, and the dramatic fireworks are damp squibs. But the score is very good. Lloyd Webber's written some gorgeous, soaring tunes that'll make the hair stand up on the back of your neck.
The songs deserve a better production, if not a better show.

I go with both articles, agree with the music being very good, the story being very hit and miss and the producing being a dogs dinner.

I have said on here, it needed someone with the creative instinct of Cameroon Mackintosh to pull this through.

Andrew has to stop being so controlling and do what he does best and that is with a piano and a pen and let his creative have free run on what they do best, without his meddling.

PLEASE let this utter drivel die. It is so bad it is past saving, even by a genius like Hal Prince. Worst score ever to grace a West End stage and worst lyrics to grace just about any stage. (Sorry if I'm sitting on the fence here lol).

The elephant in the room is THE BOOK IS AWFUL. No amount of creative team changes can fix that; the lyrics aren't great either but it's the book that makes it so difficult for the rest of the creative team to get it right.

The marketing is also pretty poor, they just haven't managed to come up with anything as iconic as the original Phantom&Rose image - the Christine-bot mask wasn't actually all that bad, but the logo type and the rest of the poster is so dull, and now they've moved onto that ridiculous photo against too much empty space.

I think LND has proven to be too expensive to easily rework. If they could go back to the drawing board and revamp the show entirely it might be salvageable - but it's too late for all the grand plans for the show to come to fruition now.

Love Likley to Die...

What a terrible shame! How I loved this show, it's dramatic depth, gripping tense story and spectacular staging...

What a shambles! This is what happens when you produce a show for the wrong reasons.

Perhaps, at last, this will signal the end of Ben Elton's musical career. (Please, please, please!)

I've found more dramatic depth in a bowl of soup, to be honest. And I found the story more ludicrously laughable than tense - the only thing gripping about it was my having to grip the arms of my seat to prevent myself from getting up and leaving LOL.

The two quotes below were written by the late great Broadway critic Walter Kerr about the shows "Kelly" and "Joyful Noise", which were real turkeys in their day. I believe either of them would apply to "Love Never Dies":

"....a bad idea gone wrong".

"There is a double difficulty. One is to know in what century the musical takes place. The other is to know in what century it was written."

Love Likley to Die...

I have to admit that I find this show fascinating because, whilst I didn't particularly like Love Never Dies, all of the criticisms made against it could equally apply to Phantom of the Opera - overblown score, laughable story, unconvincing characters etc. So why isn't LND a hit when its predecessor was?
#10

Love Likley to Die...

Because Gaston Leroux's original story is tense and thrilling, for a start. There is no tension in the love triangle at the heart of LND. There is also very little threat- the first musical involved deaths and risks of death, whereas the second involves an accident.

There is also the issue of the sumptuous design and fluid staging on multiple levels of the first. It tapped into an 80s zeitgeist, whereas LND has created very little buzz, because, as a show, it has the "so-what?" factor.

Finally, ALW has been his own worst enemy as a publicist, making wildly hyperbolic claims- such as the opening in 3 cities at once debacle. None of the publicity has suggested that this is an unmissable story.

And then, there's the word of mouth...

Love Likley to Die...

Phantom was a success because the book has a plot and although unashamedly purely based on love it has depth and soaring emotion.

Plus it had a great producer who put together wonderfully the talented production team who created gold.

The fact is Webber and his team cannot produce unless and manage shows. Even thought they've had success with Sound of Music and Joseph, who wouldnt have? And when the going got tough a year after TV, they couldn't keep them alive.
Since Webber took to the reigns of producing he has lost so much money and respect and hasn't produced a hit show of his own musicals - Sunset (sadly), Whistle, Beautiful Game, Woman In White and his revival of Evita all flopped and lost massive fortunes all because his poor producing and working skills.

Right from the beginning I thought LND would flop, not for any bitter reasons, but the claims he was making of opening it in three countries, transfer to broadway in mere few months etc all before a seat had been sold.

As people keep saying - he needs to stick to his piano and pencil and just write the music.

Love Likley to Die...

Eastwickian, I agree - the Phantom score is bland and boring and the story and characters are pretty un-interesting to say the least. But the show's success I think can be summed up in two words - Hal Prince. The genius of his direction turned an otherwise highly mediocre show into a piece of theatrical magic. It is not coincidence that POTO won Tonys for Best Musical and Best Director and not best score and best book (those awards were won by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine for the infinitely superior Into The Woods).

Now let us take our centre stalls seats and watch him ruin 'The Wizard Of Oz'!

Well I'm holding my breathe on Wizard. The sets are shaping up to look great and the casting talks are very promising... but he'll do something ruin it...

Wasn't the set for 'LND' supposed to be something wonderful?
As for the casting, its pantomime stunt casting. It s the London Palladium remember!

No, actually the Oz sets are incredible. Doesn't mean the show won't be badly produced though.

Who is attached to the WOZ cast?

Panto stunt casting with popular names, would probably make this show a success however for Webber indespite of still bad producing..!

Does anyone have any pics of the WOZ set design, i'd love to see how it shapes up!

Enough,enough already, about the Wizard.

I could understand all you guys being sceptical if The Lord used a big broadcasting corporation such as the BBC, under the ruse of a 'talent' contest to help promote the show, or buddy up with the countries biggest newspaper, such as The Sun, to help promote tickets, or even do a sequel to a show, based on another musical that is already very successful, such as 'Wicked', which would be a blatant cash in.

If he attempted to just do one of the above I would understand your cynicalism banter.

Love Likley to Die...

While I agree ALW is a poor producer of his own shows and revivals, I thought he did well with Bombay Dreams which is one of my favourite shows to listen to.

Wizard of Oz will be interesting as previous productions have struggled to make it more than just the film on stage. The RSC production is still regarded as the best production so ALW will have to work hard to make it half as good as the RSC production. They need to flesh it out and if neccessary make changes so that it can work as a stage musical.

Love Likley to Die...

Jonwo - ALW is writing new songs for this production of Wizard Of Oz. Wait a minute, did I say ALW is writing NEW songs? Sorry.....ALW will rehash old songs and pass them off as new songs for this production. LOL
