Love Likley to Die...

Bombay Dreams was another great idea totally hashed up. It's rehearsals were troubled, the show was re-written repeatedly, and it failed to break even.

If that's ALW's best producing...

Exactly! Bombay Bombed!

Another mess up of Webber not knowing what to do with the show properly and wanting to try everything with some of the marketing artwork looking like it was a Indian Gay War musical... dreadful!!

And because it did so awfully in London, what did Webber do? Some 8 million taking it to Broadway where it lasted about 8 weeks... What a fab producer. I bet that cost him a painting or two...

Love Never Dies has extended bookings to January 2011.

Love Likley to Die...

Small correction - Bombay Dreams recouped its entire investment within a year of opening in London and ran for around two years in total. The Broadway production, on the other hand, lost pretty much everything....

It recouped so perhaps didnt bomb as much as I stated - but it could have ran and been far more profitable but Webber couldn't leave it alone and kept changing it.

For Broadway they completely changed the book and Webber loved it so much that before it even opened (!!) he closed a healthy London show so the "new" and supposedly better show could open in NYC, then come back to the UK!!

His thought on the new book being better was so wrong. The show lost 14 million US dollars and closed in months and Bombay was never heard of again...

Didn't Chess do something similar and it ended up tits up? I understand heavy changes took place, in order to add dialogue, it ended up only running for 68 shows at The Imperial, where another British show is doing alright. Albeit ALW did not produce this, if he did it would of lasted 34 performances.

The MOS promo smacks of utter desperation. Certainly conjours up a stark image of ALW flogging a dead horse.

I agree that the show is not good ,mainly because of the book. However, I really don't think the score, some which I liked a lot , is the worst to grace the West End stage.

keithp - obviously, as with everything in life, there will be people who have different opinions about the merits of scores etc and I appreciate that. But to me the score was the worst thing about the show (the book was awful, the score was worse). Nevertheless I'll admit I was a bit harsh saying it's the worst score to ever grace a West End stage - it's just the worst score I've ever heard and I've only been going to the theatre since 1965.lol (One very good song - which is then repeated ad infinitum until I was utterly sick of it - plus lots of music copied from his previous scores plus lots of incredibly boring, sickly OTT schlock. Though, I will also be honest and say that's what I think about Phantom of the Opera and many of his other shows too!)

I totally forgot about Bombay Dreams, I watched the show and enjoyed it but when I left the theatre I had pretty much forgot it. I can't listen to the CD either.

I love the score of Bombay Dreams - it's better than any ALW score I've heard!

Yes it's almost as good as his score for ALW's production of 'The Sound of Music'

(no mention of R&H)

While A.R. Rahman's music for BD is superior to ALW's scores IMO (though I did not much care for Rahman's music in Lord of The Rings), I don't think one should even mention ALW or Rahman in the same breath as the all-time-great Richard Rodgers.

From Michael Riedel of the New York Post:

"...The show [Catch Me If You Can], which will star Norbert Leo Butz as an FBI agent who tracks down con man Frank Abagnale Jr., will open on Broadway in the spring. It's being directed by Jack O'Brien and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell.
O'Brien and Mitchell are about to be sprung from "Love Never Dies," the "Phantom" sequel. It was supposed to open in New York in the fall, but now I'm hearing it won't get here until the reappearance of Halley's Comet in 2061.". . .

They haven't sprung they jumped.... and good for them, 'Catch Me If You Can' is wonderful.

It appears there's a lot of work still to be done on "Catch Me If You Can" too before it opens on Broadway. Just read on Playbill that Brian Yorkey (Next To Normal) has been brought in to revise the book.

Catch Me was pretty solid it just had a few book issues which im glad they are sorting. They must keep on Aaron Tivett in the lead as he was fantastic, as was Norbet

Aaron Tveit is the only reason I'm interested in seeing this show. All the songs I've heard from it are pretty bland and boring and I found the movie pretty boring as well lol.

'Catch Me If You Can' had a great number of rewrites, redesigns- the lot, during its short, but successful, Seattle run. It has been constantly rewritten since it closed in preparation for its Broadway bow.
There were two full recordings made of the show, one at its very beginning and one right at the end of its run. The two are very different and I think the latter is very strong.
Maybe it should get its premiere at the Adelphi and let the dieing monster that wont die, die! lol

Does Catch Me have a theatre yet on Broadway? I reckon if Love Never Dies fails to reach Broadway or does and flops then Catch Me will go to The Neil Simon but it really depends on how other shows are doing.
#49

Love Likley to Die...

Its getting seriously close to the show taking the Neil simon, the owners are getting rapidly fed up with the waiting/conformation game with 'Love Never Dies' and Mr Lloyd Webber.
Its not the only show that wants the Neil Simon.

Just read that LND has extended its booking period to January 2011. Well I guess when you have £700 million, you can "throw good money after bad". lol
