It will always be a reach to people who don't live it everyday. Enjoy your echo chamber of whiteness on this thread. I will happily speak up and continue to do so. What starts as a noise complaint can turninto cops showing up in the REAL world, not in your theater bubble. And that can lead to violence on Black bodies. So the optics of Ms. Lupone felt racially motivated to a predominately POC company - whether you like it or not. But it's obviously most of you don't care about how POC feel in this scenario. You'd rather us shut up and accept what we are given. That's what you and Patti have in common.

"

We are not talking about “the real world” though.

We ARE talking about a “theater bubble.”

The cops are not going to storm the Shubert and arrest the cast for being too loud.

Not everything is a social justice battle.

Like I said, I think her approach was insensitive, but I also think SHE is insensitive. She has also been an incredible, fearlessly vocalally for the anti Trump movement.

She is on the right side of history.

She’s just on the wrong side of tactfulness.

Anyway, I’m done for now. I’ll check back in tonight when the convo takes yet another crazy turn as I’m sure it will.
"

But see this is where your ignorance shows. Inside the theater community POC are often treated just as they are on the streets and in the world. And to most of you, you cannot comprehend that. So it's frustrating when POC speak up about their experiences and are shut down. RACISM exits in the theater bubble. It's why Patti has 28 show and Audra far less - but more Tony's. Maybe look up the Black Face that bowed on Broadway. Museum of Broadway has a whole section on it. You thinking there is a separation is exactly the problem. You just proved my point.
"

Of course racism exists in theater. No one is denying that. We are talking about an isolated incident that has nothing to do with race whether you like it or not.

Andagain, I too am black.

Call it a day and go tweet about this into the abyss.

It never has anything to do with race until there's a murder. Glad you're brainwashed too. Go tweet about that.

We’ve gone from “the show I share a wall with is too loud and I don’t want to sign their Playbill” to murder.

We understand how deadly it can be when the cops are frivolously called on POC by irritated white people. But the truth of the matter is this DID happen in the theater bubble. Context matters, yes? Are you saying you think the managers of the theater were going to call the cops on the cast of Hell's Kitchen for being too loud? To conflate this kerfufflewith cop violence is ridiculous, more thana little desperate, and does nothing to convince people of your POV.
"

No, I'm saying the ability for a white woman to discredit two Black LEGENDS in the industry cannot be shrugged off as a mishap. We have to police, pun intended, this behavior because the reverse wouldn't be permitted. Patti's behavior is micro-aggressive, but she's using her unhealthy privilege as a white woman to escape consequence and many of you are letting her. She's comparing her resume to someone who would never be afforded the same opportunities EVER. To speak of Black women this way had no consequences in 1950, when Patti was growing up. The context is her lack of respect for Black art in the same space and about artist that have more Tony's than her - if were counting credits.  It's the belittling of Black greatness and all that enable it. For POC Audra and Kecia are greats and racism in this country is consistently discrediting - which is exactly what Patti has done.

A Black star wouldn't have been permitted to request a theater manager to keep the noise down?  You don't know that.

Patti's behavior is micro-aggressive, but she's using her unhealthy privilege as a white woman to escape consequence and many of you are letting her.

Letting her?  I'm sorry, is Patti our dog?  I don't even like Patti Lupone.  What would you have us do and what do you think would be the IRL consequences of that?  More to add to an online mob that achieves nothing?  Again, you really need to think of activism outside of the internet.

And you should open your mind to comprehend that Broadway can possibly be just as racist as America- even if you don't see it. Sadly folks won't just be sitting around and tolerating white micro aggressions so everyone can debate about who gets the next Tony's.

Once again… how can you not see how this is ironically disempowering??? One is *handing* Patti LuPone power by demanding respect and apology. I’m not trying to dissuade anyone from wanting or feeling deserving of apology or understanding - but she does not actually have the power to discredit or devalue anyone. The real powerful move here is to just be resilient and keep being excellent. To recognize that Audra & Kecia’s belief in their own unshakable excellence along with the support of countless people who validate their excellence is enough. This whole thing being “made right” should not be contingent on Patti LuPone apologizing or “not getting away with” something. I honestly don’t even totally know what you mean by “getting away with it.” She is being called out by so many people who are in support of Audra McDonald and Kecia Lewis. Evidently, Audra McDonald and Kecia Lewis have faith in their excellence. Demanding or requiring respect, apology, or punishment conveys a need that is disempowering. Of course it would be awesome if Patti showed some remorse. Makes sense to want it. But this need.. this demand… I just don’t know.

We don't need her power or stamp of approval. We need her to keep Black legends out her mouth and if she can't she will get the backlash she's getting. I love how people blame the folks defending these Black women for having an opinion. WE DIDN'T START THIS. PATTI DID.

I mean, not to go all Into the Woods here, but if we're casting specific blame, Kecia Lewis made a private request that was not directed at her or involved her in any way public. And that's why all of this is happening, generally.
