Most of the lyrics and lines in WICKED are god-awful. I was watching some of it last night because It had been so long and all the stupid Wizard of Oz references are terrible, like when Glinda asks Fiyero what's in the punch or something, and he says something like "lemons and limes and oranges" and GLinda says "Oh my." I literally CRINGED.
I think its lemons and peaches and pears
and I thought that was kinda funny
HOWEVER
I Refuse to listen to
SHE'S A TERROR
SHE'S A TARtOR
I just wanna slit my wrist
Almost all the lyrics in WICKED are awful.
Another awful one, this time from BOMBAY DREAMS:
Akaash: Let's start Bombay Dreams all over again, and dedicate it to Sweetie. And in the end, we can give each other the longest, most passionate kiss in bollywood history.
Priya: Kissing in a Bollywood film? Unheard of!
Akaash: Just this once?
Priya: Okay, Just this once.......HERO!!!!!!!!"
(Music swells and they make out for like 2 hours)
AWFUL!
I loved Bare to death, but this line from "You and I" always makes me squirm:
"Hey little boy would you like a ride, a lollipop, a puppy?
How about a baseball bat? – there’s one in my pants"
I love that line!!!!!!
I just though of another one:
Big Sue: Now who is this Marcus, Gary guy, I do'nt remember him, and I've got a perfectly good memory. What's his last name?
Phillip: I believe it was something foreign...ah yes, it's...Composite.
Big Sue: Marcus Composite? What kind of a name is that?
Phillip: You're not very bright, are you dear...He's a composite of every boy that George has ever been obsessed with.
Big Sue: Phillip! You can't just chuck any old guy into the plot!
Phillip: Well, considering SOMETHING SOMETHING SOMETHING
Big Sue: I marvel at you're creativity.
Phillip: Creativity comes in many different forms, dear. Sometimes it's knowing how to stir up a bunch of people.

I hate that whole segment. Love the show.

Just about the whole song of "Gimme Gimme" from Thoroughly Modern Millie. That song just really bugs me...
And awww I enjoy Wicked.
I like Wicked too BUT:
'For the first time I feel wicked' makes me want to stab my eyes out!
And not trying to be a smartase, Munkustrap, but the 'lemons and melons and pears' conversation is between Boq and Nessarose.

Oh my goodness. Yes. That line really bothers me too. It totally just kills the mood of that song >.<
Muppet - are you ABSOLUTELY positive??????????????? I only saw it live once (and that was enough) - but on a certain video I have it's ABSOLUTELY, positively Norbert and Kristin.
I couldn't be more positive. It's DEFINITELY Boq and Nessarose... well, I'm not too sure which video you have but in 'the' Wicked that is currently running in the Gershwin Theater the conversation is between Boq and Nessarose.

I'm not a muppet, by the way
I don't like that "She's a terror, she's a tartar" line either. Every time I hear it, I think of that chunky green and white tartar sauce you can get at restaurants. Ew.
it may have been taped during previews.
I was just wondering about that too... maybe yours is an early version from the previews or the SF run.

No, no - it's definitely the Gersh. I think it was October 14th. Yup, that's it - nevrmind.
can any of the wicked lovers give me a reason to like the chorus? they're positively awful. "look at heeeer, she's wicked!" it just made it seem like a parody of a show instead of an actual show. actually, i thought the whole show was a joke until someone ensured me that they were all very serious, and that it wasn't a musical about mocking musicals at all. after that, i was very dissapointed.
i would also like to add: nearly every lyric by tim rice and frank wildhorn. bad, bad, bad. and to the lovely deary that suggested that we can't take clever lyrics and the lyrics to wicked are supossed to be clever... i suggest you study music and poetry and then revisit the score, and tell me that it's still "clever" and not just bloody sad.

Feinstein, you took mine right out of my mouth. "Look at her, she's wicked!" And she sings about how "no one's gonna bring her down" and then they say "we've got to bring her down." Ugh.
Basically anything the chorus sings in the show has some atrocious lyrics. And I like Schwartz's music! But his lyrics in Wicked are painful. But I DO like the bushel/crucial line from Godspell. Aw, hell, I just love that show.
"Think twice before
You poo poo it."
"I'll give you a dollar."
"You're a gentleman and a scholar."
glad we're on the same page, wolfy! i've never heard other people talk about them so i didn't know if i was the only one that thought the chorus was a little off it's rocker. but life is about learning from your mistakes, so that you don't repeat them. and therefore, i won't be going back to gershwin thee-ater for a long time.
(btw, i enjoy some of schwartz's other music, like godspell and pippin, and some of hunchback. but the actual music in wicked again, gives me a headache. i guess schwartz has gotta have some worts, huh?)
*I love you, a bushel and a peck
A bushel and a peck
and a hug around the neck*
That song ruins an otherwise wonderful show

Wow! for hating Wicked so much, you all know the lyrics very well. Re: "There are bridges you crossed you didn't know you crossed until you crossed." It really is just Glinda trying to be profound. Basically she's just saying that she made a bunch of choices that led her to where she is at that very moment but along the way she never would have guessed this is where she would end up. I mean, she didn't know that all of her decisions were going to make her lose her best friend. That's the cost she discusses.
But I'm obviously in the minority because I like Wicked.

lol No problem! I've listened to the cast recording quite a bit and just sort of analyzed it along the way to see where the characters are coming from. I just figure that's what it means because of where the song is placed in the show. And also the audience knows that she misses Elphaba but because her decisions have made her a public figure, she can't let that show.
"nearly every lyric by tim rice and frank wildhorn. bad, bad, bad."
Tim Rice? Are you serious? I Don't Know How to Love Him, Don't Cry For Me Argentina, and most of his early work with Lloyd Webber are brilliant as well as nearly all of Chess. As for Wildhorn, he didn't write the lyrics. His liyricist were:
Victor/Victoria (three songs) - Leslie Bricusse
Jekyll and Hyde - Leslie Bricusse
The Scarlet Pimpernel - Nan Knighton
The Civil War - Jack Murphy
Dracula - Don Black and Christopher Hampton

*points to own username* I don't hate Wicked, I activitely enjoy the OCR. It's just that the lyrics/songs I mentioned and the chorus that make me scramble for the forward toggle on my CD player.
