Well, in this thread, no one has diluted MEMPHIS' success. And I know I haven't. So I'm only speaking to this thread and my posts. I'm truly happy to see ANY original musical do well. MEMPHIS is no exception. I just don't think it deserves the title of Best Musical but since when did the Tonys ever care about giving the award to the actual best musical of that year?

I'm certainly not trying to dilute its success. I'm actually happy a completely original musical is doing so well, especially with tourists.

And yes, it is just my personal opinion it doesn't deserve to win the major categories it is favored to win.

It's a slow season for new musicals.

I think it's telling both Isherwood and Brantley chose "none" for score that should win. Even they think there shouldn't have been an award for Score this year.

This happens every few years. There are many people who have Tonys - or Oscars or Grammys or any other award - that won in a slow year. And you can't take it away. They are winners. But people can certainly look back and say, "How did THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE win Best Musical?"

Some years, some categories are more competitive than others. The fact that we're having this discussion shows it. Few were bored and waiting for the season to be over when Patti won, or Alice Ripley, or Christine Ebersole, or Victoria Clark. There were dissenting opinions but not an overwhelming boredom or indifference like there is this year.

If she wins, the she wins. But there are quite a few people indifferent to her performance and MEMPHIS. And yes, those are just opinions.

I know that Memphis is not Art, but I think it's a great, fun show with a lot of heart and hard working people behind it. So I'm thrilled that it's doing so well with all these awards and nominations. Was expecting that CZJ would win this one though...
