as we all know, the filming is underway for Memphis... pretty neat to see the process... supposedly, Chad Kimball is sans wig, and things like lighting, choreo, etc are edited for the filming too. I wonder how distracting the cameras are to the auidence.

Here are some pics from the Memphis Blog, has anyone seen the trailer on 45th street?

Side Note: can someone please confirm if Kimball still goes shirtless?!

Wig? Since when does Chad Kimball wear a wig? If he ever wore won, he hasn't in at least the last two months.

Gross. That's like lusting after the kids in Special Ed.

Kimball wears a wig when he plays Huey... and yes it looks so real (and not that different than his real hair) that you cant tell hes wearing one. BUT hes going wigless for HD purposes.

He definitely wore a wig when I saw it last week.
I'm sure you can find it with some simple dumpster diving.
They used to sell it for like a dollar as stocking stuffers.
Check with your local library or inter-library loan!
Or under people's drinks. Those DVDs make great coasters!
LOL is the show really so bad you guys?? I only listened to the recording once (although I enjoyed the song Someday and listen to it every now and then)
"Colored Woman" is one of the best musical theater songs written so far this century. Besides those 3 minutes, this show is awful.

it has some of the WORST sound mixing of any theater recording ever, all the dialogue is too low and the songs are way too loud, it was on NETFLIX a few years ago, not sure it still on there.

The show is great. I can't speak for the DVD since I haven't watched it, even though I own it.
I love the show. It's basically an adult version of Hairspray.. in a way. I love "Colored Woman" (listen to this song almost everyday), "Love Will Stand When All Else Fails", "Someday", "Memphis Lives in Me", and "Steal Your Rock N Roll"
It's not nearly as bad as most people on here make it out to be. But it does lack something that might have made it a classic. I've always enjoyed the score and also enjoyed the filmed version when it aired on PBS.

Yes. Quality.

Say whatever you want. But you will never be able to take away the shows TONY for Best Musical. Which allowed it to run for 3 years and recoup. So say what you will. It's over and they got the last laugh![]()

The ''Great Performances'' airing of ''Memphis the Musical'' is pretty good. Shot in HDTV, it looks terrific, and I'm so happy that there's a visual record of Chad Kimball & Montego Glover's exciting work in their multi-Tony-winning show. It was directed by multi-Emmy winner Don Roy King, and ''Memphis'' won the 2012 Emmy Award for Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control for a Miniseries, Movie or Special.

No, baby. You see, that show CLOSED and now we get to reflect on it and I get to say how it's an awful show with Kimball giving the worst performance anyone has ever had to witness and there's nothing anyone can do about it. So I'm getting the "last laugh".
And the nominees were FELA, AMERICAN IDIOT, MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET & MEMPHIS. So let's not pretend it was stiff competition.
nobody's pretending it was stiff competition. that was a sad season with the exception of la cage. If memphis was the best musical that year then DAMN. They love it in London for some reason...

At least we started knocking out Honeymoon in Vegases and Last Ships off the list anymore...
Memphis is closing in London - not even running a year - so it wasn't that loved.
When the DVD came out - or did I watch it on Netflix - can't recall - but was just shocked by Kimball. People on this board said that the version which was filmed was not the version Kimball had been playing at the start of the run. The version which was filmed made his character seem, um, "intellectually challenged" rather than just uneducated and country. Also, LightsOut 90 is right - the sound mix when I watched it was really not very good.
